You should be charting all of your data points that you're using to calculate the average and standard deviation. But you don't have to calculate those. Select all of your data for the chart and use the Aggregate checkbox on the first configuration tab. It'll default to sum, so go ahead and change the aggregation to average. I have a table of chapters, where I have calculated how long it took (on average) for each student to read a chapter. In my second row, I have each chapter average length, and in the third row I have the standard deviation (stdev) computed per chapter.
I have created a column graph showing the average per chapter. I want to add the standard dev to each column, potentially as a "error bar". Currently it is set individual "error bars" per series. However, new entries are being entered by users, so the mean and stdev for each chapter is changing. Mean and numerical values are automatically calculated, and the bar graph dynamically updates, but not the error bar (stdev), which is a constant.
Is it possible to have the error bars rely on cell B3:F3 please? If so, how?

Hi, The "error bar" feature that you have enabled is based on the range B2 to F2. But SD shown in your table is the SD for the samples of values (time length) recorded under each chapter, which is B3 to F3. Error bars and your SDs are two different ranges. Hence, the confusion. So select all 3 rows and use combo chart, and disable "error bars" feature. Just show your summary table of values there and separately graph a table of the raw data using the ‘aggregate’ option and change the dropdown to average. Then select the regular standard deviation error bar and it will be from the raw data and should be like you want. You can pull the raw data over into columns to the side and hide them if needed.

So, I have the same question as this OP in Google Support and it still seems to still be unsolved. There is a reply, however, that successfully does it but only in scatter plot but I need it for my column chart. Are there any possible solutions? Thanks!

u/StressFluid You can't do that in google sheets; you will need to move the ones you want different into different columns to treat them as separate series; then if you want; you can make sure the 2 series that are together have the same color.

The problem is that I can't find a way to set unique values for each error bar. Error bars are configurable under "Advanced Settings"->Customize. I can set them to be None, Constant or Percent.

In the chart editor, go to the Customize tab, and scroll down. For each line on the graph you can set either a "Constant" or "Percent" type error bar, and define the value. Apparently that one value will apply to every point on the graph. I can't see any way to set error values per data point.
