I've been asked to create a number of different single-variable linear regressions for work. Doing so is super easy in Excel, and while I'm able to see the r-square figure, I don't know if there is an actual statistical significant relationship between the two variables. Is there a way to find out what the p-value for the independent variable would be if I have the r-square and N?

Does excel give you the standard error of the estimated slope? I’m surprised excel doesn’t report the p-val. Maybe you need to use the “data analysis” add on or something.

Yes: r2 = SSR / SSTO and 1-r2 = SSE / SSTO, so as long as you know the sample size, you can perform the same test you would if you has all the usual values. If the null hypothesis of slope=0 is true, then (n-2) r2 / (1-r2) has an F-distribution with 1 and n-2 degrees of freedom - the same F-test you'd run if you wrote out a whole analysis of variance table with SSE, MSE, SSR, MSR, and so on. If you prefer, r sqrt(n-2) / sqrt(1-r2) is t-distributed with n-2 degrees of freedom. Convert your t statistic to a p-value the same way you would for any other t-test. When the sample size is large, and the correlation is small, "is r2 large or small compared to 1/n?" is a real handy rule of thumb for significance.
