r/vim on Reddit: How to write and compile python
November 18, 2022 -

Hello,

I've searched google for a while, can't find anything that works.

If there is a lesson about the global structure of text editors, the OS(ubuntu), etc that would be nice.

I have something to compile for uni and I'm not sure where to search.

I like the way vim works so I try to keep using it in this case.

Thanks.

the global structure of text editors text editors are used to edit text. In case of programming that's entering the source code. If you want to run a Python program you need to invoke a Python interpreter. You can do that in a separate terminal. You should start with that. You can run a Python interpreter from inside Vim with :!python. In order to provide the interpreter with the file that you're currently editing you can use :!python %. % is replaced with the file name of the current buffer. This is the same as :!python /path/to/current/file, which is the same as running Python in another terminal with python /path/to/current/file. Note that until you :write changes to the file on disk Python will not see them. Another alternative is using :w !python. This sends the lines from the current buffer as standard input to the Python executable. So, no files involved and no writing to disk is necessary. The disadvantage is that unlike the first method you will not be able to provide input for a program in case it needs it (like when you use input() in Python). Yet another alternative if you have Vim version later than 8 is :term python %. That's literally running a terminal inside Vim with a Python process. The advantage is after the program finishes you are left with the buffer containing all the output that you can search in, modify, write, whatever you do with Vim buffers. :h c_% :h :w_c :h :term
