Your Step-by-Step Guide to How to Reupholster a Chair
September 22, 2025 - Place the new inside back, right-side back, and left-side back pieces on the chair in the appropriate locations, using the "T" markings and your photos as guides. Pin the pieces together, making any necessary adjustments to the fit; you may need to trim excess fabric to make it fit snugly. When you're pleased with the fit, pull the fabric taut and staple it in place on the apron of the chair seat.

How to Reupholster a Dining Chair - Seat & Back - Upcycle My Stuff
August 3, 2024 - Old dining chairs with padded seat, back and arm rests. Upholstery Fabric (mine was an Art Deco design bought online) ... The first thing I did in my quest to reupholster my dining chair was to remove the old fabric by prying out the nails and staples.

I then placed the new fabric on the seat. Learning from my lesson before, I started on the back forward this time. Working on the folds and tucks first on the arms and the back. Once I got the folds in place, I then folded the fabric under (I purposely left about an inch allowance around the whole thing for the fold), and used a staple gun to secure the fabric to the chair over the existing red carpet.

How To Reupholster A Chair Seat - Salvaged Inspirations
October 28, 2022 - Anyway, before I cleaned this chair I removed the seat. Most seats are simple and straightforward to remove. They are usually held in by four long screws – one in each corner as shown below. When the four screws are removed, the seat pops right out. This is optional. I decided to remove the seat fabric and add additional batting but I reupholstered it right over the back fabric.

Reupholstering a Chair with a Back
May 27, 2025 - My initial plan was to cover the seat and back without taking the whole chair apart. I soon realized it wasn’t possible because the bolts holding the seat and back together must go through the fabric. Trying to work around them would result in a poorly executed job. Once I removed the bolts, it actually simplified the whole reupholstering process.

r/upholstery on Reddit: How to Upholster Dining Chair Backing?
March 11, 2023 -

I understand how to reupholster the seat part. That screws off and is easy. But how am I suppose to remove the backing part? I’ve tried and it seems glued on or something. Anyone have advice? There are zero videos on YouTube on how to deal with this type of backing on a Scandinavian dining chair.

I made an effort to remove some of the material on the backing to see what was holding it in place (that’s what you see in the pictures). I can’t find any screws or anything. I tried prying it loose with a screwdriver. It feels like it’s glued on real tight.

Update

I removed the padding from the top of chair and there’s no obvious way to remove the wood backing. I tried prying it away with screwdriver but it’s stuck on good. Should I just call it a day and bring in the professionals?

September 7, 2022 - This simplified matters immensely, since the only sewing necessary was the making of several darts and miters and the case for the seat cushion. Despite our inexperience, the completed chair looked brand-new and professionally done. We had exercised care and patience to get the details right, yet the work hadn’t been at all difficult. We were so proud of our masterpiece that we showed it to whomever stopped by, and soon friends and relatives were asking us to reupholster articles for them.
