To use an American Express (Amex) gift card on Amazon, follow these steps:
Register and Activate the Gift Card: Visit the American Express gift card website, enter the card details (number, expiration date, and security code), and complete the registration process. Activation may take up to 45 minutes, and the card must be active before use.
Add the Gift Card as a Payment Method: Log in to your Amazon account, go to "Your Account," then navigate to "Your Payments" under the "Payment Methods" section. Click "Add a payment method," select "Add a debit or credit card," and enter the Amex gift card details, including the card number, expiration date, and CVV. Use your name as the "Name on card" if the card is not personalized.
Use the Gift Card to Reload Your Amazon Gift Card Balance: Amazon does not allow direct use of gift cards for purchases exceeding the card’s balance or for partial payments. To fully utilize the gift card, use it to reload your Amazon gift card balance. Go to the "Gift Cards" section in your Amazon account, click "Reload Your Balance," and enter the gift card’s balance. If the transaction fails, try entering the balance minus $0.10 (e.g., $49.90 instead of $50.00) to avoid a $0.10 hold that Amazon may place for verification.
Complete the Reload Process: Select the Amex gift card as the payment method during checkout for the reload. Once successful, the full amount (minus any $0.10 hold) will be credited to your Amazon gift card balance.
Use the Amazon Gift Card Balance: After reloading, the balance will automatically apply to future purchases on Amazon. You can use it to cover the full cost of an order or combine it with other payment methods if needed.
Alternative methods include purchasing Amazon gift cards in increments of $9.99 using the Amex gift card until the balance is depleted, though this is less efficient. Some users report success by using the "Reload Your Balance" feature with a reduced amount to avoid transaction errors.
Note: Amazon may place a $0.10 hold during the first transaction to verify the card, which may temporarily reduce the available balance. This hold typically drops off after a few days. If issues persist, contact Amazon customer service or ensure the card is properly registered and active.
Like many people in this subreddit I have been trying and failing to add my amex gift cards to my Amazon account, I did some digging in this sub and I found a solution buried in a comment thread somewhere, special thanks to u/jorgejdejesus for being the person to comment about the solution originally.
Step 1. Add the amex gift card to your amazon account just like you would do with a regular credit or debit card (Click account, then click Your Payments).
Step 2. Go to the Gift cards section under your account, and click on reload your balance. You will have to then enter a custom amount of $9.99, and then click on Buy Now. Once you have done this make sure you select the amex gift card as the payment option, and purchase the reload.
Repeat this step until the gift card is empty, if you don't want to do the math in your head every time you can just use this link and enter in your gift card information to see your remaining balance. Eventually you will only have a few cents left on the card but don't forget to add those too!
(Optional) Step 3. You don't always have to just keep adding in increments of $9.99 after your initial $9.99. The max amount I was able to put on at once for a $50 gift card was $39.91 and on a $100 it was $49.99.
I suspect that you could find higher increments but this method already takes some time to go through a single card so I didn't mess with it more to see what the limits were. Be warned I did lose a random $0.10 once after a higher amount I entered didn't go through but it's only $0.10 so whatever.
That's it! Now you can use your amex gift cards on Amazon.
