My son is learning HTML at school, and his teacher told him to install Notepad++. If I were you, I would install Notepad++ via wine. Because I assume that the teacher will probably refer to certain functions of Notepad++ in class. If the alternative editor does not support these or these functions are accessible via other shortcuts, menus etc., your son will experience difficulties in my opinion. More on reddit.com

If you want to edit the page just on the client side and not permanently you can just use the developer tool (F12 in chrome). Open, double click the html/css you want to edit and add your code and it will be visible live on the page to screenshot. More on reddit.com

My friend and I are trying to put together a webpage and we have a template that we want to manipulate but are n00bs when it comes to this and so we have no idea which program to start with.
Just to give you an idea, we're trying to manipulate a template that has the appropriate layout, but we want to change the text and the images.

Vim. Seriously, any will do. HTML doesn't really need auto-completion or syntax highlighting; they're only nice-to-haves which may or may note speed up writing and reading. As long as your edit-compile-run cycle is optimized, you should be good to go. (That's often the bottleneck; inline editing with Firebug and Webkit dev tools ftw!)
