r/Hashimotos on Reddit: Hashimotos and stomach issues
April 2, 2024 -

I am nervous that some other hashimotos related issues may be catching up to me!

I have started experiencing some stomach distress issues over the last few months that are gradually getting worse. Symptoms include:

-Diarrhea -excessive and foul smelling gass (particularly in the evening) -bloating -occasional stomach pain -indigestion -constipation

It started earlier this year with indigestion and gradually the above symptoms have started becoming more and more frequent. I have always experienced occasional constipation as many with thyroid issues do. Otherwise I have never had these sorts of issues, and always considered myself to have a 'strong stomach' and never ever had diarrhea unless I was unwell, now it is most days.

Has anyone else experienced similar? Could this be related to the hashimotos? I am trying to book in with a GP but as I am sure many are experiencing, I am struggling to get an appointment.

Does Hypothyroidism Affect Gastrointestinal Motility? - PMC
It has been found that hypothyroid patients show significant reduction in gastric emptying [1, 2, 7, 15] and that no relationship exists between thyroid hormone deficiency, gastric excretion, and acid secretion [16]. Our patients had primary hypothyroidism, without any systemic disorder, for 2–4 months, and they were all suffering from minor dyspeptic problems. None of them suffered from severe gastrointestinal system complaints such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or constipation.

Can my thyroid cause stomach pain and bloating? - Eveline Rodenburg
November 26, 2021 - If your thryoid is working too fast, the opposite can happen: foods moves through your gut too quickly and you get loose stools and diarrhea. That’s not only painful and inconvenient, it also prevents you from absorbing the nutrients you need. Hypothyroidism also seems to lower the levels of stomach acid.
