The movie is based off the Hindu mythology describing the end of the world which is said to occur at the end of the Kali yuga. What is a yuga? Well in Hindu lore, history is divided into yugas which doesn’t have an exact quantified number of years (said to be around 4 mil though) but it includes many centuries. From the birth or Earth to now we have gone through the Satya, Tretha, Dwapara, and now Kali yuga. What is the Kali yuga? The Kali Yuga is described as a time of chaos and a lack of unity, this chaos is said to have overlapped with the end of the Dwapara yuga, when the Hindu epic Mahabharata occurs. The lack of belief, spirituality, humanity, and empathy, or any form of kindness with the demon Kali growing in power across the time of this entire yuga. Who is Kali? A demon who has many origin stories based on the source of your lore from the Vedas which have various puranas (collections of myths). But they are said to have taken birth after the pralaya (essentially the big bang) and come out of dormancy to defeat Dwapara (reigning person of Dwapara yuga) and Kali’s rule results in loss of kindness and the thought of Hindu deities. Who is Kalki? Kalki is said to be the final incarnation of the ten prominent incarnations of one of the major Hindu deities, Vishnu who is seen as the protector. This birth on Earth is to defeat Kali and starts another pralaya (Big Bang) to start the next kalpa (cycle of time and yugas kickstarting everything again) in the process. He is said to have been trained by the warrior Vishnu avatar, Parasurama, who is one of the 7 immortals named in Hindu lore. He is blessed by Shiva (the destroyer deity) with a horse (Devadatta) and a sword. There is an extravagant and well written take over of control to defeat Kali which includes reigners of other Yugas. It is said the story ends with him escaping to the next Kalpa. He is also said to be from Shamballa a secret and said to be one of the most knowledgeable towns in the lore. Now this is getting a sci fi take to modernize the story and present it to us so I’m hyped AF. The previous movies of the director showed promise for a nuanced take with layered writing and this is his first action film let alone big scaled film. More on reddit.com
