We have push notifications for PWAs on iOS since 16.4 Personally I think it's the way of the future, most apps are basically websites wrapped in Cordova anyway. I think its only going to get better especially as the EU puts pressure on Apple. Answer from xisonc on reddit.com

PWA on iOS - Current Status & Limitations for Users [2025]
Leveraging iPad features: Developers should consider how to best use iPad-specific features like the Apple Pencil or trackpad support to enhance the functionality and appeal of their PWAs. With updates like the "Add To Dock" button on desktop Safari and the "Add To Home Screen" button in in-app browsers using Safari View Controller, Apple has made installing and accessing PWAs more straightforward and user-friendly. These updates are part of a broader effort to improve the overall usability and appeal of PWAs on iOS platforms

June 2, 2024 -

does it still work well on iOS? last time i used it there were issues

is there still pushback against "Add to home screen" dialogue that pops up? I've read lot of users don't like it when websites ask for permissions (even for myself i only add a pwa to home screen since i know what it is but for most ppl they dont know what PWA is)

has anything changed significantly since 2017 (last time i used it).

is it worth building a pwa in 2024? It always is, even if you decide to have a native app as well. They are progressive web apps... It's like asking "is it worth building a website in ${CURRENT_YEAR}?" is there still pushback against "Add to home screen" dialogue that pops up? IDK. Because that can be easily avoided and you can give a better UX for it. We can and should have a custom install flow using beforeinstallprompt events. has anything changed significantly since 2017 (last time i used it). They've gotten a bit better on iOS, but Apple still makes it intuitive for the install part. But I want to emphasize... PWAs are not just the "add to home screen" part. They're a whole collection of technologies that make the web more app-like. Things like service workers and all kinds of APIs. From the perspective of a user though, maybe it's different, and there are pros and cons. PWAs really can't eg run in the background or access your files without your permissions, so some social network app can't track your location all the time. On the other hand, the team that works on the PWA probably doesn't get the best and highest paid engineers (largely because PWAs aren't very widely used), so things might be less polished.

r/apple on Reddit: With iOS 17.4 beta in the EU, no browser can install PWA apps, even Safari
December 28, 2023 -

From twitter post:

“Finally, iOS treats all browsers equally when it comes to PWAs. Previously, only Safari was able to install and run PWA apps. With iOS 17.4 beta in the EU, no browser can install PWA apps, even Safari. It seems PWAs have been disabled entirely.

Oh yes, when you set a third-party browser as the default browser and then you delete it, iOS sets Safari as the default browser.”
