SAS troops storming the Iranian Embassy, 5 May 1980 (Β© Crown) The involvement of the SAS in domestic law enforcement was something of a last resort. It only took place after the Home Office had formally requested support for the police from the Ministry of Defence. During the 1980 siege, the regiment operated under close government supervision via the Cabinet Office Briefing Room A (Cobra), Britain's crisis management command.

1 week ago - The Iranian government declared that the siege of the embassy was planned by the British and American governments, and that the hostages who had been killed were martyrs for the Revolution. Operation Nimrod brought the SAS, a regiment that had fallen into obscurity after its fame during the Second World War (partly owing to the covert nature of its operations), back into the public eye.

The British government quickly decided that safe passage would not be granted and a siege ensued. Subsequently, police negotiators secured the release of five hostages in exchange for minor concessions, such as the broadcasting of the hostage-takersβ demands on British television. Identified in the photographs as βthe man with no glovesβ, Blue Team leader Rusty Firmin lead his 6-man team at the rear of the building into the library. The SAS swiftly cleared the building and lead the hostages to safety down the main stairwell.

I don't think people realise that the SAS legally didn't exist before this. It was extremely classified until they just appeared at the Iranian embassy so the government couldn't deny their existence any longer. Everyone just thought they were with the police until the truth came out
