So my son just passed his permit test online. The next steps say schedule an appointment at the DMV but the next appointment is not until October and the permit test expires in September. Makes no sense but does anyone know if you can just go and wait at the DMV basically as a standby or what.

Check the schedule a few times a day. People cancel and switch time slots frequently.

If nothing opens up after refreshing the website for appointments in Kapolei, the worst thing that would happen so your test wont expire the 30 days is to register an appointment in the next closest dmv which is probably Waianae and do the appointment there. On the website, there's still openings for September in waianae.

I made the soonest available appointment possible at the DMV but it was for January 23 and I kind of need it sooner. I read that at some locations next-day appointments are made available at 3:30 PM. Is there any other way to get in sooner? Can I show up and just wait?

AlohaQ says it opens up next day slots between 330 and 430pm, but I've never had luck with it. Next best thing is to show up and wait. Do it early, because depending on location, there will be too many walk-ins by midday that they will start turning people around. Plan to stick around for a few hours.

Have you tried the satellite offices? The Kapolei office often has open slots within 3-4 days. And if you go early they sometimes will allow same day walk-ins (depending on what service you need)

As the title states, I am about to take my road test soon. Do you guys have any advice and things to look out for during the exam?
For example, a common area/road that are prone to mistakes? Also, since there's a hill and stop sign leaving the parking lot, would it be a deduction if my car (an automatic) goes back a bit after hitting the gas? Mahalo

Make sure your car would be able to pass a safety inspection; some testers will walk around your car to make sure it's safe. There was.a crack in my windshield and the inspector said no testing with that car until the windshield got fixed. Always, always, always do a full stop whenever you're supposed to stop...stop signs, red lights, exits. Do not do a rolling stop. When shifting lanes, do a manual head turn, do not rely on your mirrors...and use your blinkers.

Just to let you know, the general consensus is that the Kapalama/in town DMV is the hardest road to test on. Streets may be wide, but there is a LOT of traffic and it gets dicey during rush hour. I'm assuming the Kapolei and Waipahu ones are easier. Otherwise, the one thing I got docked on was looking out for bicyclists. When you make a right hand turn , always look over your right shoulder behind you (your blind spot) for any incoming bikers. It's not enough to just look at your rear view mirror or your side mirrors. Also keep vigilant for any speed limit signs. The tester knows where all of them are, YOU don't. It's easy to miss when you're super nervous - I missed a 20 mph sign (he said I was going 25 mph) and got docked for that. Practice the route - ask any friends who took the test recently what the route is and practice it. Also like the other poster here said, do not do rolling stops. Rolling stops are sometimes called "California stops". This is when you press the brake to slow down your car before approaching an empty intersection but you don't come to a complete stop, then you press the gas and make your next move. People do this all the time in normal driving, but don't do that during the test. Stop at every red light and every Stop sign. Those two points I got docked on actually makes me way more vigilant about checking for speed signs and bicyclists, especially since I've witnessed a biker run into a car from the side because of that negligence (they were ok, but yeah, a lot of angry words were exchanged). You don't forget what you get docked for, that's for sure lol
