TLDR Much happier with Keychron K3v2 except for some remapping and backlight annoyances

I originally bought the Logitech G915 thinking it'd be the endgame and make me happy. Turns out it looks crappy during daytime without the backlight active (very little contrast between keys and legends), and my arm started getting uncomfortable from the width. I've always been fine with full-size keyboards in the past, but I guess I'm getting older and it's bothering me more than it should have in the past. Also, the on-the-fly macro recording wasn't all I hoped; you have to keep the Logitech G HUB software running in the background, and it always inserts delays between keystrokes by default, and you have to open the software to remove them. They're a single click to remove, but still at that point I might as well use Pulover's Macro Creator which is also just a few clicks.

So, I bought the Keychron K3 + a macropad kit thinking that would be my new endgame. I am much happier now than with the G915, and there's only a few annoyances that keep it from being perfect.

First, I really wish Keychron released permanent remapping software. My laptop and this keyboard have a different layout of Home/PgUp/PgDn/End keys, and I did not realize how crazy annoying this would be before purchasing. I use these keys all the time, but since my job requires regular switching between the Keychron keyboard (docked at my desk) and the laptop keyboard (when I'm in the field), I can no longer touch-type those keys. I use those extra keys all the time and it's the main reason I got a K3 instead of 70% or smaller.

Keychron recommends SharpKeys for remapping, but that requires a manual toggle and logging in and out every time I switch between laptop keyboard and docked keyboard (to change the mappings).

I also find I frequently accidentally press the Light key in the top right of the keyboard when reaching for Delete. I'd like remapping it to Insert if I had the choice (so I could have separate dedicated Insert and Delete keys).

I am thankful that the Bluetooth has no lag that I've noticed, there are lots of useful Fn-key keyboard shortcuts (they're officially undocumented, but I found them on Reddit at https://www.reddit.com/r/Keychron/comments/lrr970/list_of_shortcuts_in_keychron_keyboards/), and the backlight has good brightness levels for day and night. My last complaint is there's no way to disable the always-on backlight patterns while still maintaining the temporary backlight indicators - connection status when resuming from sleep, Fn+B for battery status, Fn+2 to switch to another Bluetooth device, and so on. The Caps Lock indicator keeps working regardless even if the backlight patterns are turned off, but all other indicators are disabled. During the day I'd like to disable backlight for battery life, but not lose all those indicators. Oh yeah, and the keys are still clearly legible during daytime with the backlight off - this is a huge improvement over the Logitech G915 which is hard to read without the backlight on.

Agree with much of what you said. My quick review: Good: - Switches are really nice - Good key caps - Solid feeling case - Slim, with decent / ergonomic design language Bad: - Flimsy legs (one broke within a few days of normal use) - Layout is horrifically bad (why switch pg up, pg down, home, end, del, etc., around like that, makes no sense...) -- whoever designed the layout of these keys is honestly deranged - Dedicated backlight key (which can't be remapped, as not a key computers register?!?!?!) - Dedicated backlight key in top right corner, so easy to accidentally hit (causing you to have to cycle through a ton of profiles just to get back to static backlight) - Dedicated screenshot key o_O - "del" key in function row - No way to remap keys on kb bios, so have to change in OS (in 2022... wow) All in all, definitely not recommended for the price.

How’s the keychron K3 v2?

If you want the keys to be exceedingly responsive then go with the K3 V2 with Keychron Low-Profile Optical switches. You barely have to touch a key for it to register. This can be problematic for those who rest their fingers somewhat heavily on the keys when not typing or for those used to normal profile keyboards. If phantom keystrokes are a worry for you then the Gateron Low-Profile Mechanical switches require a little more force and travel to register. You can change switches at your convenience should you purchase the Hot-Swappable version of either keyboard. The keycaps are also made of different materials. The K3 V2 keycaps are made of ABS which are cheaper and therefore wear more easily over time. They also allow more light through from the backlight resulting in more legible symbols and vibrant colors. The K3 Max has keycaps made of PBT which cost more to manufacture and are more durable. However they have a more bland, dull and matte finish while also not allowing as much light through resulting in softer tones. I work in low light and prefer the backlight to shine through and enjoy the colors. I also have yet to notice any degradation or shine on the keycaps in normal lighting but it’s only been in use for less than a year. If the backlight is white or otherwise not as important and you work under normal lighting then you may prefer the PBT keycaps of the K3 Max. Of course you can always change the keycaps for those of your choosing just as long as you realize that those choices are much more limited. This will likely remain the case given the popularity of normal profile keyboards and the Keychron specific stabilizers on the larger keys (aka Space Bar, Left Shift, Backspace and Enter / Return). The K3 Max also has QMK / VIA support should you want access to macros and shortcuts but at the expense of losing optical switch compatibility. If you plan on mainly using the keyboard for working in normal light, aren’t excited about the backlight, or don’t plan on gaming as much then the K3 Max might be preferable. I tend to work in low light and game occasionally so the backlight colors and key responsiveness convinced me to stick with the K3 V2…. for now. Hope this helps. More on reddit.com

Keychron K3v2 or K3 Max?

Hi guys, quick update. My K3 Max arrived yesterday. Thank you so much for the recommendation NOT to buy the K3v2. The Max is so much better. Way heavier, keys (PTB Double shoot), nice tap sound, great look and feel. Even the switches are “better” – the v2’s are also great, but they klick more smoothly. Only disappointment is the LED Backlight – it’s just not necessary and does not work verry well. So just get the K3 Max, epaxially because it’s just a few bucks more. More on reddit.com

Questions about K3 V2

I chose the K3 because I came from the very slim Magic Keyboard and didn't want a keyboard that would maybe need a wrist support. Anyway, I am really happy with it. The battery life is not great coming from the Magic Keyboard which would last 2 months, but if you plug it in every 4 days for 15 minutes I think you should be good if you use the backlight only at night. The only MAJOR annoyance I had was the sensitivity. I don't know what versions there are, but I have the hot swappable red optical one. You just had to rest you fingers on the keys and it would trigger. Like 1mm was enough to register a press. This made the keyboard unusable for me. I wanted to return it, but it turns out that there is a little spring you can remove to make it about as sensitive as any other keyboard with enough key travel that it doesn't trigger accidentally the whole time. I honestly didn't want to do any work on it and it probably took me about 1.5h to take out the switches and remove that little spring that makes it super sensitive. But it was well worth it. I am really happy with it. I chose the red switches because of noise level and with normal typing they are not any louder than most other keyboards, which I was going for. So summed up, really great keyboard. Things you should change: Remove the springs that make it sensitive: This is for brown, but works for red too Set the sleep timer to 20 or 30 minutes, the 10 minutes it is set to from the factory are annoyingly short.
