Hi, excuse my ignorance but I'm looking to get my first mechanical keyboard. I saw a Keychron Q9 and V5 on display and really loved the feel of the Q9 (with Gateron Pro Blue switches), but can't afford a Q series keyboard.
I was thinking of getting a V5 backbone with Gateron Pro Blue switches, or a K8 Pro, but someone told me that you can't really buy keycaps that are compatible with Keychron keyboards, as the keys are of a specific size not commonly found in keyboards.
Is this true? I wanted a keyboard that I can switch the switches and keycaps, but is a Keychron not suitable for this? I just wanted to be able to buy pudding keycaps, from say, etsy, but maybe the Keychron isn't the best choice for them?

You can use any MX-style keycap, aka 99% of purchasable keycaps that exist, on Keychron boards that use standard-size MX-style switches.

Standard (e.g., not low-profile) Keychron keyboards are compatible with virtually all standard size (e.g., not low-profile) keycaps. These are called "MX" style or "MX Stems" That's the little + shaped stem on the top of the switch. So your friend who told you only Keychron keycaps fit on Keychron keyboards is very wrong. I have 6 Keychron keyboards and only one still has Keychron-made keycaps. Low-profile keyboards, on the other hand, can be a big hassle, depending on the switch type, stabilizer layout and some other variables. So if you're looking to buy a low-profile keyboard, expect a very limited option of replacement keycaps. That said, look carefully at the picture of the keycap set and make sure the set comes with all the proper sized keys you'll need. While the alphas and the numbers/F-row are pretty much universal (unless you're using a non-English or international layout), you'll need to make sure it comes with the proper sized right shift, right Fn, right Alt/Cmd and right Ctrl keys. Most sets will, but some specific layouts may not. Also, make sure it has all the proper navigation keys for the proper rows (like Del, Home, PgUp, PgDn, End, Insert, etc.). If you've noticed, keys on different rows have different heights and shapes. So while any keycap will fit on any row, it may not match the height and shape/slope of the other keys in that row. So you'll want to make sure the keycap set has enough or extra keys to fit your layout.
