Estates sales and thrift stores. I usually do a pretty thorough sanatize/clean (leave it outside in the sun, clean all the surfaces, wash with warm water and laundry detergent, etc.) furnished our whole house like this. Quality of furniture is usually better than ikea too.

The alley. You have to be picky and check constantly, but people throw away great stuff because they can't move it.

I saw an earlier post about using Kijiji to furnish a home and because am doing that currently I decided to try it out. I discovered this beautiful dining set that would normally cost thousands of dollars (I saw the same set new on another site).
My first question is what can I safely buy? I am not buying anything with fabric on account of bugs, so any of that stuff is out, but what about a leather couch? Is that ok?
My 2nd question is, how do I move all this stuff? I am a single person who doesn't really have a lot of family in the city. I can rent a u-Haul, but still need some extra hands to move it. I am happy to pay people but I do not need an entire moving company, just 2-3 strong guys to spend 20 minutes moving it into the truck and then 10 minutes driving to my townhouse and another 10 putting it in there and would pay each $100 (not sure if that is enough).

I've furnished probably 3/4 of my apartment from Kijiji and it's fantastic. People pay SO much money for quality furniture only to get rid of them a couple of years later! My advice: Be very thorough in asking the seller about the condition of the piece. You don't want to show up only to find all kinds of damage and waste a trip, especially if you have to rent a car to go out there. Ask about whether the home has had pest issues, pets or smoking. Ask for photos of any damage so you can assess whether it's alright with you (at the very least negotiate for discount) Look at the photos and check for clues of the owner's house - does it look a mess? Trust your gut on this one. I personally wouldn't do leather couch, not so much that it's fabric but rather upholstery has so many nooks and crannies you just can't check for potential pests. When you get there check along the cracks /seams for signs of bed bugs or cockroaches! Especially if you're buying from someone who lives in a big apartment building...I've had infestations before (not from Kijiji furniture) and trust me you will want to do anything to prevent carrying nasty eggs home. Hire a handyman by the hour on Kijiji - I've seen rates around $50 an hour, or more and they will come with a van, just really make sure you want the piece before you go get it. But it'd be easier if you just brought a friend? Most furniture could be handled by just 2 people. Usually the seller will also help you carry it down to your car if you ask. Did you know you can also rent vans from Home Depot? Not sure if it's more or less convenient for you but Uhaul isn't the only option. For smaller pieces like coffee tables / arm chairs I've also just called an uberX! Bring with you: Cash, masking tape (tape drawers close), sheets / blankets or anything that you can cover the bottom and sides of the piece to prevent bumping or scratching when you move it, and lay it out when it's in the car. Right there in kijiji you can find people who do small moving projects. Usually they own minivan/minibus and help you with extra hands.
