Most furniture have dust batting on the bottom sides. Most likely you will need to pull the staples to remove the cover to expose the mechanism to get to the loose screws. · Once you find the loose bolts/screws put some plumbers teflon pipe tape on the bolts/screws to use as a thread lock or get some Loctite thread sealer.

Remove the back, the swivel platform, if equipped, and the rocker platform. (Other sites tell you how to do that.) Open the chair to the reclining position. With the chair upside down, pull the staples holding the upholstery and "undress" the area where you see all of the play while moving the arm in and out. This will be on the front vertical corner edge of the chair. Look carefully at the gap that opens and closes as you wiggle the arm. You will see the gap and staple legs that no longer hold the two pieces together. You will also see the remains of green glue that once held, along with the staples, the arm section to an inside panel. Carefully increase the gap so you can cut the staples with a pair of dikes. Since it was once glued, I used Gorilla glue in the gap and clamps to pull the gap closed followed by a 6 screw angle bracket on the outside and screws from the inside of the panel into the end piece of the arm section that was pulled away. Always drill pilot holes for the screws. Re-dress the upholstery and re-assemble the chair. Wish I could show pictures on this site so you could see exactly what I am talking about. It is now stronger than it was and you would never know I had worked on it.

May 25, 2024 -

La-Z-Boy recliner I purchased 10 or 12 years ago is developing a small tear on the seat. Anything I do to mitigate/repair this damage short of having it reupholstered?

This is 100% both the dog and my favorite place to sit in the house.

r/howto on Reddit: Looking for advice on how to fix my dad's La-Z-Boy recliner
August 18, 2025 -

The seat has been slightly tilting to one side for a while (I wish I had noticed it sooner). Today it started lurching much more to the side and back. He's ready to pay hundreds for a repair but I wanted to see if this is something that I can fix.

Here's the damaged area. This is on the chair back where it attaches to the base, on the top is the mechanism that you flip down to lock the chair back in place when it's connected.

The screw (or is it a bolt?) came loose and has been digging into the wood when he reclines, after many months it finally carved its way through the wood entirely.

There appears to be a metal receptacle for the end of the screw down in the hole (sorry I don't know the terminology). If I try to put the screw back in there, it doesn't connect and stay attached at all. I expect that one or both are damaged, getting a replacement screw would be easy at least.

What's the best solution here? I've read about solutions involving wood filler, I'm not sure if that's the best idea here. This bracket has two other holes in it for some reason - I could just drill holes beneath where they line up and put 2 new screws in, away from the damaged area.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
