February 16, 2024 -

Looking for ideas! We have recently bought our home and have a lovely but ‘blank slate’ garden with a decent sized lawn. We’ve already added a greenhouse a couple of veg beds to the back right, but hoping for a pretty border to the front and left side. Soil is clay mix (South East England) and the orientation is south west facing so it gets quite a bit of sun in summer. Currently there’s lavender, lemon balm and rosemary all doing well, what else could I add that’s not too fussy? The front border is along the top of a retaining wall, so we don’t want anything too high that would block light from the patio below!

Plants for an ultra low maintenence border?
Even if the plants you choose are low maintenance, the weeds will not be. Once you’ve put in what you like, might want to spread some wood chip or something to dissuade the weeds a bit. More on reddit.com

I’d go for shrubs, mainly evergreens. Stuff like choisya, fatsia, sarcoccoca, cardoons, smoke bush, ninebarks, several hydrangeas, flowering currant. Maybe put some salvias in the sunny bits, some acers where it’s shady. Roses do well on clay. I’d suggest painting or varnishing the fences and sending some climbers up. More on reddit.com

What kind of edging requires lowest maintenance?
There is not a single product that will just let you “plant and forget” when it comes to grass barriers. Grass spreads, no matter what you do. Seeds spread, stolons spread, roots spread. The one thing to know with grasses, is how deep the roots go, and then you barrier has to be deeper than that. With zoysia I think it’s 3-4inches in ground will stop the roots from going under the barrier. More on reddit.com

How can I make my border look less bare and boring? Criticism is very welcome, as I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m watching a lot of garden videos on YouTube, but the gardens are on another level.
You could add annuals in the gaps between your shrubs but in a few years time this will fill out anyway. More on reddit.com

You do have to read the instructions on the packet (and this post on how to grow wildflowers in a pot, border or meadow will also help!). And rewilding your garden is another approach to low maintenance gardening.

11 Low-Maintenance Small Garden Design Ideas for Your Landscaping

However, growing plants in pots often requires additional effort to keep them watered and fed enough to thrive throughout the growing season. Instead of loading up your small garden with pots, stick to just one or two large accent planters. Make sure the containers are not clay; they dry out the soil quickly, so you need to water them often. ... Border gardens encircle, outline, and define spaces in landscapes large and small while adding tons of color and texture.

Smooth out any difficult angles and awkward corners (either by extending the grass or enlarging your borders) to make a shape that’s easier to cut. Climbers are the perfect way to extend your growing space by making the most of walls, fences or even trees. Self-clinging climbers such as ivy, Virginia creeper and climbing hydrangea attach themselves onto surfaces (rather than needing wires or trellis to grow up). Paint or stain the surface before planting for a low-maintenance, high impact look.

February 8, 2025 -

Hello I'm trying to tidy up my garden a bit. I've recently tidied up this side of the garden to match the other side, but I'm time poor, skill poor and I don't really enjoy gardening - so I'm after some ideas for plants that I can plant and leave to it!

I've now finished the bricks and thrown in an old bag of compost (the soil is very 'cloddy').

The garden is south facing, and plants need to be cat safe and child safe. Thinking of growing something up the shed? There is also a persistent bramble which I am constantly battling so any ideas for dealing with that much appreciated!

Speak to me like a complete novice and thanks for any ideas!
