Im debating to upgrade my M1 MacBook Air to either: The new MacBook Air M4 with 16GB ram 256GB SSD 8-core (base model) or... MacBook Air M3 with 24GB RAM and 512GB SSD with 10-core GPU for the same price. Which one would be better? Im someone who uses it for daily tasks as well as video editing and gaming like World of Warcraft.

i just bought a m4 14" 48gb 12-core w/ 512gb ssd for about $2400 with tax. Wondering if I should return it because I could realistically wait until September or labor day to get that same spec. But not sure if it would reach closer to $2000 or not (I've no experience with macbook sales tbqh)

Just want a laptop that doesn't slow down and i can have a nice experience till the next 5 years

Is it worth it to get a 2019 MBP 16" as a backup/transition machine before getting a M1/M2 later this year? My university sells devices that were used on its premises sometimes at lower-than-market prices. I'm interested in getting a used MacBook Pro 16'' from 2019 (A2141, i7 2.6GHz, 16 GB, 512GB SSD) for $345. My plan is to buy this as a "backup" computer and something I almost only use to load streaming services on a larger screen. I intend to buy a better MBP (probably M1/M2 max) before the end of the year, when hopefully I'll have more cash available with a new job. The pictures show signs of use but nothing major, and I don't mind scuffs and scratches because I just want a good machine for a low price, aesthetics isn't an issue for this purchase. Is that a great/okay/bad deal? I asked a very similar question here: https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/1hmr8o1/used_macbook_pro_price_advice/ and someone told me to avoid any MBP pre-2019, and the 16'' from 2019 was the first model to potentially consider, so that's what I'm doing now.

M4 Pro seemed like the most substantial update since M1, M5 won't be a huge leap.

The M5 chips is probably not going to be an extraordinary upgrade. And recent rumors also suggest that we won't get a redesigned chassis like previously expected. Moreover the new chip will probably release early next year and not late this year. So another 4-6 months. If you get a decent deal on an M4 I don't see any reason why you should wait if you desperately want to upgrade.

We have 4 laptops for our family of 5. 2 Lenovo and 2 mbp. We need a budget option for our middle schooler and am wondering opinions on refurbished MacBook airs.

Hi! With the eminent release of MBA M4, I am struggling to choose which MBA to buy. My intended uses is programming (relatively light programming, since I work with heavy LLMs and those have to be done in a cluster anyway), and then normal browsing, and class preparation. What has gotten me confused are the prices/what is worth it. Here are my options: I could go simple with a MBA M3 16/512 for €1239 or a MBA M3 24/512 for €1619 or wait for the MBA M4 16/512, which will probably cost €1529 I am not a „have to buy the best possible“ kind of person, but I would really like to have a very good experience, for a reasonable price. I would hate to buy one of these and then in a year think „man, I should’ve bought the other one for this or that reason“. I also don’t know if I should wait to make this decision, since the M3s are heavily discounted right now, which could change with the release of the M4. What are you guys’ opinions?

I'm a CS Student heading into my 3rd out of 5th year of school. I'm currently running out of a Dell XPS 9300 512/16. It has served me well, but the battery isn't as good anymore, and I am already into the ecosystem. With the education plan savings, I am looking to get an M4 MBA as my new machine of choice, but am struggling to decide which iteration to go for. My priorities would be to run and compile fast, I will usually have browsers, discord, docker, IDE, etc. This machine would be used for schoolwork and personal projects, as well as playing Football Manager. I already have a laptop for my work development, so I don't need to worry about that. When I do (hopefully) graduate and (hopefully) have a job, the machine will probably only be used for browsing and some side projects. My primary priority would be future proofing the laptop. I know the M4 is a good chip and will be supported until 2031-32, but I am looking to figure out the config I want. Originally 16/256 was my choice, as I can always get an external SSD, but am wondering if it's worth it to get 24gb RAM for an extra $250 CAD, which makes my total $1750 tax in. I know Mac is great at managing RAM, but as it isn't upgradable, I am considering it. I also know I wouldn’t get the extra read/write speed with 256 gb ssd, but I don’t see myself dealing with monstrous files like that either. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

So I’ve been eying up a used 2021 14” MacBook Pro (M1 Pro chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) for around £700 give or take. I’m wondering if that price is worth it or if I should get something else.

I’ll mostly use it for uni work (research, writing), browsing, and photo and video editing. I’m planning to use it for the next 4-5 years minimum, maybe longer.

My current one is a MacBook Pro from 2017 and it’s kinda struggling, especially when it comes to the battery, so I’m looking for a good upgrade.

Would you recommend I buy the Pro for that price and my use case?

Edit: Here are the specs: MacBook Pro 14-inch (2021) - Apple M1 Pro 8-core and 14-core GPU - 16GB RAM - SSD 512GB

It should serve you well. My 16” with similar specs is holding up nicely but it’s due for battery service soon. But I’m going to grab a kit from iFixit to support right to repair.

My M1 Pro 16”, same specs, is doing great. I use it for coding, photo and video editing, audio editing. It’s still a beast and not slow at all. I have no reason to upgrade.

I am planning to use the M4 macbook air for the following: Obsidian for notes, Emacs (for programming, todos, other writing stuff), general browsing, YouTube watching, reading ebooks and pdfs, simple drawing (likely on my ipad and then sharing to macbook for inserting into notes, etc.). I DON'T intend to do any kind of video/audio editing. Will a 256GB base variant be sufficient for my needs? I don't want to spend the extra money for 512GB unless really necessary. I do intend to use the machine for the next 6 years or more. Please advice. This would be my first macbook purchase.

Kicking around the idea of getting a MBP. How much do I really need, though? The M4 Pro is ~$1850 for 24GB ram and 512GB. Or is the M4 enough and then I could get 24GB ram and 1TB SSD for ~$1900? I do a bit of coding, and recently a lot of machine learning. If I do any neural network stuff I can do that on my desktop which has an RTX 2070 so I don't know if I really need a top of the line MBP for that, but something strong enough to do a day of coding and running other types of models would be nice. I need to upgrade my 2018 intel Macbook Pro. If a new model was to be released in October-ish, I would regret updating at this point of the year. If Apple aren't releasing a new model until early 2026 though, I would prefer to upgrade now rather than wait. Are Mark Gurman's predictions usually accurate? Are most rumours still favouring an early 2026 release now for the M5 Macbook Pro's? Thanks.

We don't know. No-one outside of a select number of people at Apple know the exact release timeline. If you need a computer now, get a computer now, otherwise you'll wait forever for the next thing. If you're okay with your current MacBook Pro, and it's doing what you need it to do, then keep chugging along until you can't any longer. If it's at a point where it's interfering with your ability to do what you need to do, then upgrade. You can always get a used or older model now as well if you're not keen on spending new prices for the current systems. Apple's refurbished store is often full of solid options, as are resellers like B&H Photo, Costco, and Microcenter. Don't chase rumors as you'll always be chasing something in the future and never stop to enjoy the now.

I think the more important questions is: Can your machine last till March 2026. If it can, wait. If it can't, get the M5 and move on.

Advice for anyone considering a MacBook, from a random Reddit guy: If you're not sure whether you should buy the MacBook Air or if you need the MacBook Pro, you should probably buy the Air. If you're not sure if 16GB of RAM is enough, it probably is. Don't buy more storage than you really need. 256GB may be enough and 512GB most certainly is. If you're trying to decide between a new M4 MacBook Air and an older refurb, buy the M4. It will be supported by Apple longer. If you choose to ignore #4, don't get anything with less than 16GB of RAM, and stay away from Intel based MacBooks. If you're buying a MacBook in the US, check the prices at Amazon, Costco, B&H Photo, Best Buy, etc. There are deals to be had this time of year. If you're coming from a Windows computer, you're going to be pleasantly surprised.

What's your honest opinion on the need for Mac book pro vs a really high end Windows laptop like Dell XPS or any other similar high end models? Is MBP still the fastest to load multiple apps and run memory heavy programs like editors/ IDEs?

Long time windows user but the M chips are just killing the competition. Particularly for work, the power efficiency is an insurmountable advantage. Can’t imagine using an intel laptop right now when I can work on a MacBook pro for 2 days without a plug. We’ll see if the qualcomm chips can make windows laptops competitive. My son got a surface 11 for school so i’ll see how it works for him.

There's nothing even coming close to ARM M-based MacBooks for work. Not yet. I had high specced Dell XPS for years and while I liked it, it barely could survive running docker with IntelliJ IDEs, browser, Slack/Teams etc. Even with PopOS it was a pain to work on with modern codebases. My MBP M3 Pro has not even turned it's fans on yet and i run 4-5x as much on it now.

I'm a computer science student who does software/AI work in university. I currently use a 13" 2020 Intel MacBook Pro. It's getting a bit sluggish for doing the AI training and software work I do. I want to get a new MacBook Pro, so I'm considering get one after WWDC in June this year when they update it. However, I've seen the rumors saying 2026 will be a big year and they'll make the laptop thinner and get rid of the notch. Not sure if anyone will answer, but here I go. I have a Surface Book 13" i5 which is now 6 years old and is failing. Being a fanless PC, it often overheats and performance is bad. I was a Mac user since Mac OS 6, but switched in 2016 to Windows because most apps were universal anyway and Macbooks got shitty back then. But now Windows 11 is working on my nerves with all of their ads and unwanted features shoved into our faces, while Apple got their shit together and finally makes good computers again. The Macbook is for business use. I'm a business consultant using a lot of office and videocalling. I don't code, except maybe Jupyter (Python) Notebooks on some data. In my free time and sometimes as part of my job I do photo editing and I will also sometimes be video editing in the future (4k 60p, something my current laptop really cannot do). I expect also, on rare occasions, to do some deepsky astrophotography which requires image stacking of hundreds of RAW images. But the photo editing will probably be the core requirement. On my current laptop, image editing is a chore. Exporting a RAW to JPEG while using denoise takes 5 minutes per image, and the laptop overheats. Editing 100s of images is impossible. As for hard drives: I have a NAS and can also make use of external drives. I expect my laptop to last 4-5 years, because it's a business expense I can regularly revise my needs. I'm considering Macbook Air M4 24Gb/512Gb (10 core CPU 10 core GPU) MacBook Pro M4 pro 24Gb/512Gb (12 core CPU 16 core GPU) I'm edging towards the MacBook pro, but I'm not sure the extra 500EUR is worth it. Everyone says the M chips are so amazing and the MacBook Airs perform so well. I do very often use the SD card slot and I also often need an HDMI port. But I also have dongles laying around if necessary. I'm worried about the overheating of fanless computers. The M4 pro model is now reduced in price and only 50EUR more than the normal M4 MacBook pro. Thanks!

Here’s some context: I want to finally pursue my interest in fashion design and want a new device to help me with that. I’ve seen Procreate in action on the iPad and that is intriguing to me. How usable is this laptop for:

1: Day to day performance (Chrome, Powerpoint)

2: How is battery life

3: any cons if any are present

I would only ever use it for super basic tasks, I'd also have a year of warranty on it if thats important.

I don’t have any personal experience with one, however from what I’ve heard they’re ok for what you need. Battery life and performance are definitely a far cry from M1, but you should still get totally usable results given you temper your expectations. Assuming you get a brand new battery, I’d expect around 6-8 hours of battery on a charge, however if you’re buying one used and not replacing it this can vary. The screen will still be amazing and will look great, speakers will be decent but not as good as modern offerings. Still better than most other laptops on the market. As I said, performance should be usable however the 8gb of ram is becoming a limiting factor, though that model of MacBook has upgradable RAM so you can just throw another 8gb stick in there. nope! Overall this Mac should still be decent in 2025, but don’t expect it to last for more than a couple years. At the end of the day, these specs are dated.

I bought a 15” 2015 model recently for 120 euros and I love it. It has 16gb of RAM, I lucked out with a decent battery and the screen is in excellent condition. I’d go up to the 15” if you see any available. It’ll get you quad-core processing and 16gb of ram which go a long way in making it feel modern. You can also easily swap out the SSD for a much faster nvme with the help of a $10 adapter. I use this computer every day for web-based work and mild photo editing in Lightroom as well as watching movies. I have it running on Sequoia 15.2. Just definitely make sure you open the bottom case and clean out any dust, and swap out the thermal paste. Mine was unbelievably filthy and its runs way cooler, faster and quieter now.

Ir’s not a good idea. I had that machine until early last year when I swapped for an M3. While the machine itself is very capable and a beast for the time, the M chips are a huge leap in performance, battery life and fan noise. Even an M1 Air is a better option. Also the support for Intel systems is going the way of the Dodo.

I’m thinking about buying a used MacBook Pro 16'' with the M2 Max chip (38 core GPU, 32GB Ram, 1TB), and I found one at a really good price. I’m not completely sure whether it is still worth buying, especially now that newer models are available.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on two things.

First, is the M2 Max still a good choice in 2025? Do you think it’s powerful enough for professional work such as video editing, 3D work, or development, or would it make more sense to wait or invest in something newer?

Second, how many years of macOS updates should I realistically expect if I buy it now? I’m trying to understand how long it will be supported so I can decide if it’s a good long-term purchase.

Any opinions or experiences with the M2 Max would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

How good is the "really good" price? That might be the deciding factor.

Typically Apple supports their hardware for about 7 years with OS upgrades and another 2 years or more with security updates. The M2 Max came out mid 2023, so you should be covered until 2032 at least. Whether it’s a good buy depends on the price compared to other, newer or new MacBooks and what your intended use is. It certainly is still a very capable machine.
