Made in Abyss Movie 3: Dawn of the Deep Soul | Made in Abyss Wiki | Fandom
September 24, 2025 - Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul (メイドインアビス 深 (ふか) き魂 (たましい) の黎明 (れいめい) , Meido in Abisu Fukaki Tamashī no Reimei)[1] is the third movie in the Made in Abyss franchise and covers the Ido Front Arc. On January 4, 2019, the Made in Abyss Twitter account announced the movie alongside a promotional poster, followed by an announcement on March 22 that the movie would release in January 2020.[2][3] On July 25, 2019, the official Kadokawa Anime YouTube channel released a trailer that announced...

A review of Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul | Everything is bad for you
May 28, 2023 - Dawn of the Deep Soul starts exactly where season 1 of the series left off, with Riko finding the fabled field of flowers that her mother may or may not be buried in, right under her legendary pickaxe weapon stuck in the ground.

r/MadeInAbyss on Reddit: Dawn of The Deep Soul was not what I thought it would be
July 11, 2022 -

Let me start off by saying that season 1 was incredible for me, as it was for many other people. I didn't feel so invested into a show for a very long time. But after watching Dawn of The Deep Soul I was honestly bummed out, I felt like the story completely changed its focus.

One of my favourite scenes from season 1 was when Riko was hit by the Orb Piercer, and Reg was hopelessly trying to save her. It was a really heavy scene that showed the will of the protagonists to move forward despite the dangers of the Abyss. It was desperate and horrible, but it felt real, it was what needed to be done to survive.

In Dawn of The Deep Soul, however, I thought that all the gore and horror shown was unnecessary. Why did the cartridges need to be made with the body parts of human children? Why did the white whistle need a sacrifice to be made? Why did Bondrewd experiment on orphan children in the most horrible way possible? It honestly became kinda stupid to me.

It went from gore and horror to show what the protagonists needed to face to venture further into the abyss, and their resolve to continue pushing forward, to gore and horror for the sake of gore and horror.

And after watching the start of season 2, I feel like the show will continue going with this trend, which is a shame for me.

I am by no means trying to ruin the show to anyone else or trying to force my opinion on others, nor am I calling the show bad. I just wanted to see what others think about this, and maybe some different perspectives will help me love the show again.

I mean at least for that arc you kinda were told time and time again in season 1 how fucked up bondrewd is, from both nanachi and ozen. And the story shifts as the new arc opens up to be a bit more Character and dynamic-oriented as opposed to setting up the world in the beginning of season 1. Bondrewd I think was meant as a means to show how convoluted someone in power can get in this world. He's doing these things pretty much completely safe from backlash. He's of the highest rank whistle, and he's also the most successful scientist of the whistles. He's achieved a lot, and was the one that got black whistles to even be allowed in the 5th layer. The cost? The loss of humanity and morality over time. He keeps producing results, and keeps getting closer and closer to completely losing his humanity. Something as simple as disregarding flavor for functionality in nutrition bars warped into sacrificing his own humanity for a whistle, which warped even further into taking advantage of and sacrificing others' humanity for scientific gain. Nanachi and crew are the only people to shift him a little bit back towards humanity I think, as seen with his last scene in the movie, having a human eye poke through the mask. And for specific questions you had : why orphans in cartridges? - they didn't have to be. It's just what he had to be honest. why did the white whistle need a sacrifice to be made? - this is explained further during the content of season 2 for a bit. Life reverberating stones do not straight up KILL the person involved in making it. why did he experiment on orphan children? - like I said earlier, at this point in his life he had been very out of touch with his sense of morality, yet still had status and power. Some way, in his mind, he needed human lives to experiment with. And he was all done experimenting with his own. So I guess a whole slew of factors end up making that decision. And no, I wouldn't say season 2 goes too much into that pointless gore and horror trope that much. Sure there's stuff like that will still happen, it IS made in abyss, but nothing like bondrewd level with experimentation and the such. The world and the abyss is just unforgiving a lot of the time. I'd be happy to talk more because dawn of the deep soul is one of my favorite anime movies and I find it to be a very emotional experience, and I guess I at least THINK I understand the motives behind the scenes and characters. But who knows! Maybe I don't! But I still like the series haha

Im not shure how it is in the anime, but at least in the manga there's an explanation for most of the stuff that happens in mia. The cartridges for example are made from humans because only living things can be cursed by the abyss and so, to redirect it from himself, Bondrewd uses those.(children bc a)shock factor, and b) they're children, noone cares what happens to a bunch of orphan homeless children in the world of mia.

Comment of the Day

Comment of the Day goes to u/Nebresto for explaining why the fourth Marulk short should be seen by all MiA fans:

Just a quick recap of why 4 is so superior, and should be watched by all Abyss fans: It gave us actual lore. We found out: There's a common tongue most people around the world apparently speak. Someone flew a freaking airship in the Abyss. They have airships, that seem to be mostly made of wood. Marulk had a dad, and wasn't just abandoned somewhere. And it is confirmed he was found in the Abyss, not on the surface.

Questions of the Day

  1. Has your understanding of Bondrewd and his goals changed since we last saw him in the first season? Why or why not?

  2. Do you think Nanachi is a “bad person” for helping Bondrewd create the cartridges? Why do you think Nanachi originally agreed to help Bondrewd at the start of the film, only to back out later?

  3. What do you think of this new teamwork dynamic between Reg, Riko, and Nanachi? Do you think anyone deserves the "MVP" title, or did they pull their weight equally?

  4. What did you think about “The Blessing of the Abyss” being tied into love? Do you think this says anything about the journey ahead?

  5. What do you think about the revelation that White Whistles are created using human life? What do you think this says about their timbre being able to activate relics?

  6. Do you think Bondrewd truly loved Prushka? Why do you think he decided to rescue her and raise her, only to sacrifice her in the end?

We have reached the end of the series, so this disclaimer is no longer needed! However, please tag any source-related content properly, and refrain from alluding to unadapted events.

First-Timer in Abyss, subbed Welp oops I totally lost track of time... I liked the little difference at the start, between Nanachi scuttling down the huge plant thing vs. Reg just slowly but surely descending with his extendable arms. Oh SWEET they made it to that garden! Other cave raiders, hm? Uh-oh. ? The Blaze Reap… and this person knew it was theirs? Oh geez RIP flower garden. Fifth Layer get! The fuck kind of creature is that? So this girl’s gonna be the Marulk of the Fifth Layer, hm? Prushka’s her name, hm. Oh, that’s not good. How are they gonna get around that? Prushka is way too cute… something’s gonna happen to her over the course of this movie, isn’t it. Oh? …if that’s Reg’s operating limit… Riko no that is a terrible idea– Cute~ AI DESU YO I wonder if Bondrewd and Dr. Ver would get along. Nanachi… Ah, so Bondrewd was behind Reg’s disappearance… I was hoping he’d just gone up the forbidden stairs because he isn’t affected by the Curse. *incoherent scream* I’m fairly certain one of these Umbral dudes is voiced by the same guy who voiced Shino in Naruto and it’s tripping me up so hard. Mm… I have a feeling that’s not gonna happen, though. It’s the inverse of episode 10! Riko actually using the Blaze Reap!!! Oh that drew blood… Oh SHIT that’s crazy! Okay but we’re not even halfway through the movie yet, there has to be some sort of trick… Ah, that was the trick. What …oh. Lovely. Dear god I don’t like where this is going. the fuck Welp. Oh no… ……………………………………………… …you know I’m not even surprised at this point. Holy shit Reg Oh great… Oh god… Shit, he’s turning fluffy and not into muck , he has Prushka with him, doesn’t he… Fuck, is she in the tank on his back? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck Meinya innocently moving the Cartridge around, fuck. That got me. That got me. That’s… the base for a White Whistle… Ohp, Nanachi “sore demo”. Oh the ED was in Engrish. Goddamn, I’d heard this movie was even more messed up than the show was, but… I still wasn’t expecting kids-turned-into-batteries levels of fucked up shit. And the weirder part is I don’t hate Bondrewd??? He’s a damn effective villain.

first timer god i haven't watched the main show since lockdown started, so getting back into this is jarring it prob would have been a good idea to actually rewatch the show, but i was already occupied with geah and higurashi i forgot how horrifying this shit is, not even 10 minutes in and im already disgusted shit i remember that brondrewd bastard man prushka reminds me of riko and reg back at the surface how the fuck did this bondrewd motherfucker raise a child like that? oh bondrewd was one hell of a villain if i do say so myself. one whos goal sure isn't to make misery out of hundreds of kids, but is pretty much the same as riko and reg's. he's an "ends justify means" kinda person, but like taken to a mega extreme. like what kinda of person is totally chill with turning themselves into a fucking whistle??? no surprise that a mfer who turned himself into a whistle sees no problem with turning kids, and his own daughter into disposable cartriges. i kinda love and hate the ending tho. i love how nanachi comes to a mutual understanding with him. no apology for his crimes, no anger from him, just his blessing. on the other hand i hate it because he still deserves to be turned into a cartridge. though idk if thats horrible enough for him, given that he's totally down for being a whistle. maybe send him to the surface, and put a restraining order between him and the abyss so he can never explore it again

This was perfect. I cried like a bitch. I loved every second of it.

Bondrewd vs Reg fight was so confusing in the manga but, they made it so perfect in the movie. The way they animated Dark Reg (He kinda looks like he belongs in hollow knight) was great. They really made him pop from his surroundings, like he is an other worldly being.

This person really looks different from their manga drawing. I didn't even recognize that their hair was long from the manga drawing. I thought it was just their cape blowing in the wind.

Despite how good this movie looked, there are still times that Akihito still proves his art is superior.

I'm kinda upset at myself for spoiling myself by listening to the OST when it first released. Kevin really outdid himself and the editors really placed the songs well in the film. The Rumble of Scientific Triumph fit so well.

Despite knowing exactly what was going to happen, it still hurt so much. The VA's really outdid themselves on selling their pain. Especially during Reg's torture scene. Prushka's somber voice going through her backstory combined with Prushka Sequence, I couldn't hold the tears back.

Kinda wished they skipped over Papa's rod POLE it was still funny tho and Reg's boner. Kinda. Glad they skipped over Prushka playing with her titties kinda.

My only minor gripe is that they didn't let Bondrewd call out the full names of his attacks and they didn't show Prushka making everyone their own whistle.

I loved it.

I love Bondrewd's "oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya, oya"

They leaned fully into the Subarashis.

Requesting both of these faces as a flair immediately.

Bondrewd’s first entrance still gives me chills. Prushka running back yelling papa and being so happy to a wall of pure creepiness was so good.

Dawn of the Deep Soul, like the previous films, is less focused on action as it is in developing a world and atmosphere. The Abyss is a wonderful and terrifying place, but while the series and films were able to impart a feeling of grandeur in even the smallest scenes, Dawn of the Deep Soul is again lacking in that department.

October 5, 2024 - While the original TV series was known for how great it looks, Dawn of the Deep Soul continues to surprise in that same way the anime first. The new locales in the film are much more dour and dark than the first few floors, but the film shows that there’s an inherent beauty to even these, quite literally, darker areas. It continues the original draw of the Abyss as the trek further into the underworld continues to reveal wildly different locations with their own personalities and ecosystems.

Overall, I thought Dawn of the Deep Soul was a great continuation to the first season. This movie expanded on the ever-growing world. It added excellent and fascinating world-building. There was good character development and of course masterful storytelling.
