r/BuyCanadian on Reddit: What’s Canadian in Vacuums?
April 10, 2025 -

What’s Canadian

  • Cyclovac, BEAM, Duovac, Mvac, Husky, Rhino Vac, Cana-Vac, Hayden, SMART: Central vacuum brands manufactured by Industries Trovac, headquartered in Blainville, Quebec.

  • Drainvac and Venmar: Central vacuums made in Mont-Saint-Hilaire.

  • Aspirtech: Produced by Soliroc Métal in Saint-Joseph-de-Coleraine.

  • Plomberie PHCB: Vacuums manufactured by Aspirtech.

  • Thomson Vac: Made by Drainvac and Aspirtech.

  • Noma Canada: Owned by Canadian Tire, manufactured in China.

  • Independent Canadian vacuum retailers: Sometimes sell canister or stick vacuums under their own brand names (usually made in Asia, but owned locally, so the economic benefits stay local).

What’s International

  • Dyson: Company with dual headquarters in Singapore and the UK.

  • Miele, Sebo: German companies.

  • Electrolux: Swedish company.

  • Dirt Devil, Hoover, Royal: Owned by Techtronic Industries (Hong Kong).

  • Tineco, Dreame, Roborock : Chinese companies.

  • LG: South Korean company.

What’s American

  • Bissell

  • Shark

  • Kenmore

  • Roomba

  • Broan-NuTone: American brand, manufactured in Quebec by Drainvac.

TL;DR
Quebec is a global leader in central vacuum systems, with brands like Cyclovac and Drainvac made right here. If you're shopping for a portable or stick vacuum, it's harder to find something fully local—but buying from Canadian retailers still helps support the local economy.

New upright vacuum owner! I am looking for an upright that would help me pick up my sweet husky fur...he shed ALOT especially in the summer :) We have hard floor / tiles throughout the house, id like to get your thoughts on shark, bissell and Hoover. I prefer to get it at Canadian tires because of the points

Honestly? Find a Miele dealer in your area and they may have refurbished C3's that are sold new at Costco... for at least $100 less than what Costco sells them... I paid $299 for mine and I have not looked back!

Generally, an upright isn't what you want for bare floor cleaning. Because they have a brushroll for cleaning carpets, the vacuum needs to be constructed in such a way that there's room in the vacuum's housing for the brushroll to spin. As a result, the cleaning performance at the floor (even with the brushroll shut off) is going to be weaker than if you were using a canister with a purpose-built hard floor tool. In regard to the brands, both Shark and Bissell are pretty much bottom tier disposable machines. Hoover's got a couple decent bagged models, and their parts availability tends to be better than the other budget brands in the long term. Looking at what's available on Canadian Tire, this $500 CAD Miele Complete C3 would be perfect for your needs. It's a German made canister vacuum that comes well configured for hard floor cleaning, has some of the best filtration in the industry, and will easily last 15+ years in a normal home. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/miele-complete-c3-limited-edition-canister-vacuum-0438402p.html#srp If you strongly prefer the upright form factor, there's the $400 CAD SEBO Felix Kombi. This one's got a dedicated hard floor tool at the base unlike most uprights, meaning that you'll get canister-level cleaning performance. Much of the stuff (made in Germany, filtration, longevity) about the Miele Complete C3 also applies to SEBO's vacuums, so both of these brands are very safe bets. Only issue with this one is that it's not available on Canadian Tire. https://www.sebocanada.ca/product/felix-4-kombi-in-rosso/ I'll also copy a comment I made for another Canadian user looking for a hard floor oriented vacuum. For hard floor + carpeted stairs, I think a bagged canister would be ideal. The floor tools that come with canisters are much more effective on hardwood than most uprights, plus it's easier to clean stairs with a canister unit. After I took a look at vacuum prices in Canada, I think $300 CDN is just below the really high quality vacuum price point for bare floors (most of those were between $330-500). I'll list a couple commonly recommended options safely below $300, as well as some much better vacuums if you want to stretch your budget. Eureka 3670M Mighty Mite Canister Cleaner - $144 : Basic, time tested design. Not the most durable, and it lacks a lot of amenities that the fancier canisters have (filtration, cord winder, etc). 1 year warranty. Sanitaire SL3681A Professional Compact Canister - $157 (on sale) : Better equipped and slightly more expensive version of the Mighty Mite. 2 year warranty. $300+ CDN vacuums: Numatic JVP180 -$335 : Very well built machines from the UK. Includes a manual cord winder and uses high capacity HEPA bags. 5 year warranty. SEBO Felix Kombi - $360 (sale) : I'll admit, I'm a huge fan of this brand. These are German made vacuums designed for long life, good filtration, and easy maintenance. This one's an upright (if you prefer that form factor over a canister), but you can detach the floor head and collapse the handle for portability when cleaning stairs with the hose. 10 year warranty. SEBO Airbelt K2 Kombi - $399 : Very solid canister, has an automatic cord-winder and a compact size. 10 year warranty.

Looking for a stick vacuum. Not a lightweight one, has to have a power head. It’s for carpet that is constantly walked on with outdoor shoes.

If you like yours, what brand is it and where did you purchase it?

No Dyson’s please, they’re too much $$.

I'm looking for something to supplement my Roomba at home. I'm looking for something to help with vacuuming spaces the Roomba can't get to, such as corners, crevices, anything above floor height, or just for spot cleaning. I'm not sure if I should just go for the cheap Bissell Zing II which would cost ~100 cad, spring for the $500 Miele from Costco, or for something in between.

https://canada.bissell.com/zing-ii-bagged-canister-vacuum-2154C.html

https://vacuumwarehouse.ca/products/simplicity-jill-canister-vacuum-cleaner

https://www.costco.ca/miele-complete-c3-multi-surface-care-canister-vacuum.product.4000176316.html

Another option would be to just go for a cheap cordless stick vacuum instead as my jobs are pretty small. I've used Tineco in the past with great results as I have dust allergies and vacuuming dust form surfaces is miles better for me than any other form of dusting.

Mostly wondering if paying more for Miele is worth the investment!
