Hi JamieNewman,
With Microsoft 365 Business Basic you can get all of these:
- Host online meetings and video calls for up to 300 people with Microsoft Teams.
- Maximum group meeting duration - 30 Hours
- Maximum one-on-one meeting duration - 30 hours
With the permission, are you referring to a license that you can share to your users?
Please let me know so that I can further assist you.
Kind regards,
Jayzar
Is the m365 Business Basic license eligible for use with the Teams desktop app or web based version only?
Hi,
Questions for those like me who use Office365 business basic (yes, i work for a small cheap ass IT department). I recently had an issue with Teams were i could suddently only connect to a guest organisation i was invited to, but not to my main tenant.
i contacted support, but soon told me that we Teams desktop client doesnt work with business basic licences. So my problem was "normal".
Ive been using teams desktop client for ~100 users with such licences since 2016, without issue.
But the Microsoft support techn keeps on insisting that it does not work, and business basic let you only use web version of the office suite (that is true for Excel, word, powerpoint etc...).
It also contradicts what an other MS tech said on the support forums here:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/can-i-use-the-desktop-app-version-on-teams-with/a4241df4-7ec0-4b6e-a175-c9d5d7b15863
"you should be able to download and use the teams desktop app with the business basic license as this is regarded as a cloud service. The desktop apps are limited to the native office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook which need activation on sign in which can't work with the Business basic licensed account."
I even played the Karen a bit, and asked the support tech to ask to on of her manager cause i thought what she was saying was wrong. But the manager said the same thing.
Anyway, i ended up leaving the guest org, and all came back to normal.
If you are using Business basic, whats your opinion on that?

Thanks yes that helps, regarding the permissions I need to know if the licence allows you to share all of the applications with family or business colleagues and if so how do we upgrade to Business basic...do we have to delete or cancel 365 family to upgrade or can we upgrade without cancelling ?
Sorry for all the questions....the problem has arisen as TEAMs is no longer free and I need it for work.
@Anonymous
Microsoft Teams licensing has indeed seen some changes recently. Here's a brief overview to help clarify:
- Microsoft 365 Business Basic: Previously, this license included access to Microsoft Teams, but only via web and mobile apps. Users often faced issues when trying to use the Teams Desktop app.
- Microsoft 365 Business Standard: This license allows users to use Microsoft Teams on web, mobile, and desktop applications. It includes the full suite of Office applications both online and offline.
- Microsoft 365 Business Premium: Similar to Business Standard, this license includes access to Microsoft Teams on all platforms (web, mobile, and desktop) and offers additional security features.
- Microsoft Teams Essentials: This is a new standalone license specifically for Microsoft Teams. It provides access to Teams on web, mobile, and desktop without requiring a full Microsoft 365 suite license.
- Microsoft 365 Business Basic (without Teams): This is a new option that excludes Microsoft Teams from the Business Basic plan. It provides access to other M365 apps on web only.

Microsoft 365 and Office 365 now offer versions without Teams, with a price decrease and the opportunity to buy Teams as a standalone offer. These changes are intended to realign Microsoft’s global subscription structure following changes made in Europe in 2023.
You can, the Teams client can be downloaded and used with any license that includes Teams. For the desktop version of Outlook, you will need another licensed copy, as it is not included in the M365 Business Basic license. But if you have purchased it previously, say as the perpetual Office version, you can use it with your M365 Business Basic mailbox.
Veera,
You have a few options
- Purchase Outlook separately
- Purchase Office perpetual licenses
- Purchase M365 Apps for Business (or better upgrade from Business Basic to Business Standard, which is cheaper than Business Basic and Apps for Business separately)
Outlook is an Office application and not included with Exchange.

Dear Andrew,
Good day! Thank you for reaching out.
To answer your query, you should be able to download and use the teams desktop app with the business basic license as this is regarded as a cloud service. The desktop apps are limited to the native office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook which need activation on sign in which can't work with the Business basic licensed account.
In case you have any further queries, please let me know.
