r/baltimore on Reddit: Mid Century Modern neighborhoods in and around Baltimore?
September 30, 2023 -
I love mid century modern architecture and design. I’d like to own an MCM house one day. I know there are a few MCM neighborhoods in the DC area like Hollin Hills, Carderock Springs, etc. but I’m having difficulty finding similar neighborhoods in the Baltimore area. Does anyone know where I could look around here? I’d love to learn about the history as well. Thanks!

There are a number of MCM houses in Mt. Washington. Also, an architecturally important (and expensive) house is currently for sale, though it is signifcantly larger than most of the homes in the area. There aren't many. Baltimore has historically been a very architecturally conservative city. I think there might be the odd MCM house out on the fringes of the city, but if you want a single-family MCM house in the region, you're probably going to want to look in the suburbs. I would look in areas that were historically well-off, as that's where you'd be most likely to find houses built by folks who were willing to spend money on architecture. There might be a few up in North Baltimore (Timonium and points north). Given that it was built from scratch as a planned community in the '60s, I would think that Columbia will have the largest concentration of MCM architecture in the area. If you're dead set on staying within city limits, you might want to consider condominiums. There are some MCM condo towers along Charles St up north of Hopkins, and some at Charles Center right downtown. I have friends who used to live at 4000 N Charles, which is a Mies van der Rohe building, and it really hit all the MCM vibes.
