I’ve been playing Minecraft pocket edition for 7 years and I never thought about playing the other editions but I’ve seen many people online talking about the java edition and many amazing resource packs only work for java and this has motivated me to get it. but I don’t really understand how it all works. How does it differ from Minecraft pocket edition? I know that it’s for pc but I want to know if I can download it on my laptop instead and if it works on laptops, how exactly do I download it? I found the java edition on the Minecraft website so should I just buy it from there and that’s it? Do I need to download something with it in order for it to work? I’m sorry these may seem like dumb questions but the thing is I always played Minecraft on my iPad and this is all new to me.

When Minecraft was first created, it was written in Java. By the time Microsoft came around to acquire the Minecraft brand there was about 4+ types of Minecraft, all written in different languages and all behaving slightly differently (There was Java, Pocket Edition, Xbox edition, PlayStation edition, Pi edition etc...) When acquired by Microsoft, Mojang sought to simplify the versions of the game down to just 2 main ones: Bedrock (coded in C++) and Java (coded in Java). Ideally Mojang would've reduced it down to just one version (being bedrock) because Microsoft is the creators of C and subsequently C++ so obviously would prefer this. Java Edition only runs on PC but Bedrock runs on iOS, Android, Xbox, Playstation, Switch, Fire Phone, and Fire TV to name a few. The Java version of Minecraft has been around for years beforehand and since Bedrock edition was a complete rebuild of the game from the ground up there's no way it would be exactly the same due to the nature of the different programing languages. The Bedrock audience is a much younger user base and as such is adapted accordingly. The user interface (GUI) for bedrock is much more playful and easier to navigate. Redstone has no quasi-connectivity like it does in Java edition (which is very confusing for new players). Java has always been much more customisable than Bedrock edition. There is a huge modding community behind java which just isn't there for Bedrock. You can think of it like the difference between iOS and Android. iOS is a sort of "walled garden" where Apple has full control over people's devices. And android is open to more customisation. Bedrock edition is Apple in this case, Mojang have control over the content you see in market place, the datapacks you use, the texture packs you use, the servers you join (for the most part) etc... Hopefully this has helped you understand the differences between the two and why some users prefer one over the other. TLDR: Bedrock is the new version of Minecraft targeted at younger users, and Java is a legacy version which can't be removed without outraging fanbase who generally tend to be older. Mojang would ideally have everyone use Bedrock, but it has too many limitations and different mechanics which some users don't like and hence prefer the original Java version
