The Value of Your Efficient Gas Fireplace | Heatilator
Generally, fireplaces with features such as Direct Vent Technology, a ceramic glass front, a secondary heat exchanger, circulating fans and an intermittent electronic ignition system are going to be the most efficient to operate.
People also ask

What type of gas fireplace is safest?
Direct-vent gas fireplaces are considered the safest kind of gas fireplace. They eliminate heat loss by drawing air from the outside of a home and then directing the air to the outside through a venting system. Sealed glass doors are standard on all direct-vent gas fireplaces to maintain combustion.

How can I tell what type of gas fireplace I have?
Most gas fireplaces can be identified by the rating plate attached to the fireplace engine or can be identified through their owner’s manual. Your fireplace should have a metal plate that has been permanently affixed to the fireplace, usually near the inner controls.

These Gas Fireplace Inserts Will Get You Ready for a Cozy Fall

Is a gas fireplace insert efficient and a good source of added heat?
It's burning fuel for heat. It won't be much more efficient than your existing system, and won't add heat in rooms beyond where the fireplace is. It's pretty but as a source of heat, not huge. My impression of them is that they are more for looks than performance. The money you would spend on installing a gas fireplace, spend that on tightening up your home instead. It'll probably be more effective and unlike the money you spend on a fireplace, money spent on improving airtightness and home insulation is money that you slowly get back, forever, in the form of smaller utility bills. Is it cheaper running the gas fireplace or the central heating to heat up a living room?
The only way you’re going to know is to experiment and track your gas usage. I have a gas boiler. It’s cheaper for me to keep the house at 63° and use an electric fireplace insert to get my living room up to 66-67° vs keeping the house at 65°. YMMV based on your house size and insulation. Efficiency of gas inserts versus normal vented gas fireplaces
Get some Hargrove radiant heat logs for vented fireplace. They throw off much more heat than a standard gas log set. We originally had gas logs in our vented fireplace and there was almost no heat. Then I bought the Hargrove radiant heat logs about 15 years ago. Our family room which is 13 x 22 is heated very well by this log set. It's not the same as burning wood, but way better than most gas log sets in a vented scenario. And way cheaper than the inserts. More on reddit.com

Gas fireplace vs furnace: back of the envelope calculations

It seems like your furnace is gas also - if so then the only difference is the heating efficiency and how much of your house you want to heat.

The BTU output of each device doesn't really enter into the equation, it would only control the runtime of each device. (furnace blower costs negligible really)

Furnace: probably much more efficient (if newer), much more capable of maintaining temperature in the entire house

Fireplace: probably (much?) less efficient, but cost effective at heating a single room to a cozy temperature

I have my furnace set low-ish and use my fireplace to heat my main living room... that why the whole house is tolerable and the main rooms are cozy.

Gas fireplaces - Natural Resources Canada
September 29, 2025 - Some homeowners prefer a fireplace with a continuous pilot light because it gives them an auxiliary heat source that is not dependent on electricity. If this is your preference, look for a model with a simple way to shut off and relight the pilot so you can enjoy some energy savings. Or buy a more efficient electronic starter with a battery backup to ensure heat during a power failure. All gas fireplaces are subject to Canada’s Energy Efficiency Regulations, which set a testing standard for their energy efficiency.

Gas fireplaces—EnerGuide - Natural Resources Canada
January 10, 2025 - Use this value to compare fireplaces; models currently on the market have FEs ranging between 30 and 70 percent. The higher the number, the more energy efficient the model is. The EnerGuide label is presented in one of two ways, depending on whether the product literature lists only a single model or multiple models. Note that both labels show the statement "Based on CSA P.4.1-02." This statement demonstrates that the FE rating is based on the testing method that all gas fireplaces sold in Canada must adhere to.
