I have recently hooked up to natural gas. My existing fire logs are non-vented propane. What do I need to complete this conversion from propane to natural gas on my fire logs?
Vent free products are designed and manufactured only to burn the original fuel type they were configured for. The reason for this is due to the possibility of carbon monoxide or nitrogen dioxide being released into the room from an improperly converted vent free appliance. In the case of a vented appliance, these byproducts would be removed from the room, so there is no real danger. On the other hand, an improperly converted vent free appliance could have serious consequences. If you would like to consider replacing the entire set for your natural gas supply, our gas log calculator is a g

What is the difference between Direct Vent and B-Vent?
In short, efficiency and aesthetics are the primary differences. To explain, direct vent fireplaces have a combustion chamber that will be sealed from the home with a solid pane of tempered or ceramic glass. These systems use special coaxial venting, which is basically a smaller pipe within a larger pipe. Once the fireplace burner is lit, all of the available oxygen inside of the combustion chamber is quickly depleted as combustion byproducts are exhausted via the inner pipe. Almost simultaneously, oxygen from the outdoors is drawn in through the larger, outer pipe to sustain combustion. Becau

The warmth you feel when you stand in front of the fireplace is radiant heat, which is rays of energy from the hot bright flames striking surfaces and heating them up. Warming a room or space using a single source of radiant heat is difficult because you have to wait until the objects warmed by the radiant energy start to give off their own energy in the form of convected heat.

Your "fireplace blower" tries to capture heat energy with a tube or series of tubes which are placed in the path of the radiant heat energy leaving the fireplace. The theory is that a fan blowing air through the tube(s) will allow the blown air to heat up by conductive heat transfer then diffuse into the room, assisting with heating of the general area.

"are these blowers any good...?"

Answer- Maybe, well made units, with a large surface area to capture radiant heat from the fire and a well designed heat exchanger and fan work pretty well but are also pretty ugly IMO.

"make it more effective...?"

Answer- If you have installed it per manufacturer's instructions there's not much more you can do except make a bigger fire. I don't have actual data, but in my experience a wood fire is generally way hotter than an equivalent "size" natural gas fire.

P.S.- I would not "put... a plain old box fan next to the fireplace and let it blow". You have a chimney for a reason. You do not want to disturb the natural draft of your fireplace. This could introduce products of combustion, like carbon monoxide, into your living space and/or blow hot embers out onto the floor.

21 March 2025 - Since the blower is on the unit's exterior, it does not affect the unit’s fuel efficiency or drafting. It is a tool to help circulate the heat and provide warmth further into the home. A fireplace without a fan will still work safely and effectively utilizing radiant heat to warm up the room & home. During a power outage all wood and direct vent gas fireplaces, Inserts and stoves will continue to work safely producing radiant heat without the need for a fan.
