August 8, 2024 - In 2020, the Oklahoma Department of Commerce announced the new branding and said the tagline “Imagine That” conveys the hopeful idea that Oklahoma is a state that "surprised people by defying expectations, providing countless opportunities and inviting audiences to dream of their own personal potential." The logo usually comes in an array of colors reflecting the earth, sky, water, agriculture and forest. On the license plate, however, the color scheme is simplified.

November 9, 2025 - The U.S. state of Oklahoma first required its residents to register their motor vehicles and display license plates in 1915. As of 2024, plates are issued by Service Oklahoma. Only rear plates have been required since 1944. Prior to July 1, 2019, plates belonged to the car, not the owner. As a result of lost turnpike toll revenue and law enforcement having trouble tracking vehicle owners, the law was changed, meaning plates now belong to vehicle owners and can be transferred from a previous vehicle to a new vehicle.

Matt Pinnell said in a press release. “Using color and intentional symbology, this design pays tribute to Oklahoma’s culture and history, nodding to iconic landmarks, our original flag, state animals, and more.

The original numbering format plates were issued without Oklahoma on the plate, which made it difficult for out-of-state law enforcement to determine where the plate was issued.
