Purposefully to me doesn’t just mean ‘on purpose,’ it’s doing something in a purposeful manner, methodically, intentionally: in a way that makes it really obvious that you know what you’re doing. Purposely has never felt right to me either, since adding -ly to a noun generally creates an adjective (like friendly or manly), not an adverb. I generally avoid the question by using on purpose or deliberately instead.
