Is there a scientific name for the Milky Way galaxy?
I study astrophysics, I know a (very accomplished and interesting) professor whose current area of research is our home galaxy. He calls it the Milky Way. There really isn't another name for it. The word galaxy actually has a root that means milk (lac- as in lactose or lactate). Galaxy just means milky smudge More on reddit.com

Does our Galaxy have a better name?
Terra and Luna are simply the Latin words for Earth and Moon. Milky Way is a literal translation of Via Lactea if you want to use the Latin name. Extra Information: Galaxy is the evolution from the Greek galaxías that means milky. You could say that the Milky Way is THE galaxy because of its name. Edit: Wording More on reddit.com

Just "the Milky Way". Astronomers will sometimes refer to it as "the Galaxy", and when talking about objects within it may call them Galactic, but its only real name in English is the Milky Way and that's the only actual name you're likely to see used for it in a paper. Something I feel should be clarified based on this and other threads is that generally speaking, while many objects may have multiple names and catalog designations (NGC 224, M31, and the Andromeda Galaxy are all names for the same object), there's not some Latin name that's the true scientific name. This isn't biology and we don't really operate that way. The closest we get is naming stars by Greek letters in order of their brightness in a constellation, but even that doesn't usurp the name of a named star. For example, Polaris is the brightest star in Ursa Minor, so it can be called "Alpha Ursae Minoris" but nobody bothers with that because Polaris is a better name. It has even more designations, though-- SIMBAD lists over 40 including : 2MASS J02314822+8915503 AAVSO 0122+88 ADS 1477 A ADS 1477 AP AG+89 4 BD+88 8 CCDM J02319+8915A CSI+88 8 1 FK5 907 GC 2243 The IAU has formally recognized names for a few hundred stars (including those naked eye visible stars that have been named since antiquity), but even then it's perfectly acceptable to use catalog designations for said stars in research papers. Galaxies, however, don't generally get formally recognized names. The IAU has recommendations on how to write their catalog names, eg the aforementioned NGC 224. https://www.iau.org/public/themes/naming/#nebulae
