Hey Y'all, I bought an irregular Pendleton blanket from their flagship store in Oregon about a year ago - it's about 6X7' (or a bit short of the area of queen a mattress). It was already a little dusty from just being out on the sale floor for people to look at before I bought it. I didn't know how to wash it so I shook it out and layered on a quilt for a few months til I could figure it out.
I mostly hand wash wool sweaters, etc, because they have never seem to be cleaned well after the cleaners.
Anyway: -Is water a no-no? Hand washing a Pendleton blanket would be learning experience, but I'd be open to it... Is that possible, or is there a way I could wash it in my commerical washing machine, in a gigantic lingerie bag on super-low and woolite etc? -Does dry cleaning actually do anything to clean the whole woven wool blanket, or is it spot-cleaning only? (Cat hair, dust, etc?) -If I go to a cleaner, what should I look for and ask them to do/what should I expect they do to it? -How much does it typically cost to clean these sized wool blankets (ballpark is helpful - closest /large city to me is Denver, 2 hours away, but there are smaller very expensive mountain towns close by).

Pendleton recommends dry cleaning. Wool Blanket Care Dry cleaning is the best way to maintain your blanket. Even with the mildest washing methods blankets will lose 3"-6" in length. And shrinkage could increase with successive launderings. Also, blankets may become stiff and dense, permanently changing the soft hand and smooth appearance. So unless a blanket specifically states "washable" please dry clean only. Cost depends on where you go, probably $35-$50. I would call around for estimates, it might be cheaper to pay more locally than waste gas and time going into the city, but that's the Californian in me. The dry cleaning process is basically a regular drum washer, but they use special solvents to lift stains and grime instead of detergent and water. Then the items are air-dried and pressed, as needed. It helps maintain shape and texture of the item when water can mess with the fibers causing them to contract and warp. I wouldn't hand-wash, even in cool water. It'll get all crunchy and scratchy, and it'll be a pain in the rear to dry and keep its shape. But, if you don't mind wear-and-tear and risking the life of your blanket, you could hand wash with Woolite, spin cycle in your machine, and tumble dry with no heat until it's mostly dry and then lay flat to dry (or line dry), spread out evenly, if you can. I would call around to dry cleaners, get the estimates and ask your questions. That's my recommended approach. It's not their first rodeo!

Personally, I would machine wash it at home, but I’m willing to take some risks and I’m also very experienced with washing wool items at home, including other brands’ wool blankets. Pendleton says “dry clean only” because washing will cause shrinkage and texture changes, but Pendleton wool isn’t somehow more delicate than all other wool, and there’s absolutely no reason I can think of for this to happen if you understand the properties of wool and how to wash it without damage. I suspect that they emphasize “dry clean only” mainly to reduce human error and people being upset that they ruined their expensive blanket. There are lots of opportunities to mess up if you don’t know what you’re doing. The damage they describe - shrinking, becoming stiff and dense, losing its soft feel - all of these are cause by the wool felting. When not washed correctly, the microscopic scales on the wool fibres hook together permanently to cause these changes. But it’s easy to avoid shrinking and felting, if you understand what causes it: moisture + agitation + heat (moisture + sudden dramatic temperature change also can cause felting but this is a less common issue.) The easiest part of this equation to avoid is the heat. If you wash and rinse your wool in cool water, on a gentle cycle, with wool-safe detergent it’s easy to machine wash wool without any damage. Then lay it flat to dry. Tumble drying will cause felting (moisture + agitation + heat). Hanging to dry can cause the weight of the wet item to stretch and distort the shape. Personally, I would wash at home and expect it to come out perfectly fine. I said I’m willing to take risks, but this wouldn’t feel risky to me at all. I do at least one load of wool laundry a week and have done dozens if not hundreds of loads over the years, including wool items that are more delicate and more expensive to replace than a Pendleton blanket. Dry cleaning chemicals aren’t good for wool - a blanket will be cleaned infrequently so it’ll be fine either way, but even if the cost and convenience weren’t a problem I would still wash my woolens at home, particularly ones that get heavy wear and need more frequent cleaning. To get this blanket dry cleaned in my city, I would expect it to cost me around $50. They would inspect it to see what needed to be done and for any damage. Since there are probably no stains or damage, they would clean the whole blanket in dry cleaning solvent, then suck the solvent out and air dry the blanket. If there was hair stuck to the blanket they should remove it with a brush or some other tool. If you have any specific concerns or areas that need attention, you should let the dry cleaner know when you drop it off. For example, dry cleaning is really bad at removing smells, so if it was really smelly and that was a concern for you, then you should highlight that, and they may choose a different method of cleaning it. It’s pretty typical for dry cleaned clothing to still smell like BO after cleaning.
