r/Virginia on Reddit: What other states have personal property taxes on vehicles?
April 25, 2024 -
We moved to Virginia in 2022 and the amount I'm paying in personal property taxes each year for vehicles is ridiculous. Even Taxifornia doesn't have this tax.
Why does Virginia have this tax when they already have a state income tax?

In the 90’s the governor tried to eliminate it. It was basically his whole platform. Unfortunately it is a major source of funding for localities, so the idea was that the state would pay the tax to the localities on behalf of residents. This was to be phased in gradually, where the state would pay more and residents less each year until residents paid nothing. They got about half way through the phase-in and realized it was financially infeasible. So we are left with this odd system today where the localities bill an amount and you only pay around half of it.
