"Free VPN" extensions offered by random companies might as well be selling everyone's data to advertisers. Only use them in a separate profile and avoid logging in to your accounts while they are enabled.

So how to setup a VPN in Firefox? It’s very quick and simple. Simply go to the Firefox add-on library and search for the VPN you want. Select it and then click on “Add to Firefox’ and finally on “Add” in the ensuing pop-up. And that’s it ; there are no other Firefox VPN settings required.
- go to the browser settings menu;
- select the Additional section;
- click on Extensions;
- enter Planet VPN in the search bar;
- download VPN plugin for Firefox and add it to the panel;
- click on the extension icon in the browser panel;
- register an account (optional);
- select a server for connection;
- confirm the connection by clicking the “Connect” button;
- to disconnect click “Disconnect”.

Foreword: I don't want to use a desktop VPN because I have no need of one. I only use VPNs for browsing and I prefer extensions because they are very quick and easy to toggle. Also, I often have downloads going on in the background (not in-browser) that I don't want routed through the VPN while it's active.
I was using Browsec VPN but it's basically nagware and the pop-ups were starting to get annoying. That said, it had everything else I was looking for in a VPN. I understand that a free service is going to come attached with some limitations to entice you to upgrade, but I'm wondering if there is at least an alternative that doesn't show unsolicited pop-ups. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the US.
