Podcast equipment for beginners?
Dynamic mic: Just don’t get a cheap one. I recommend setting a minimum budget of around $100 for a quality mic. I’m guessing this is your first podcast—right? If so, here’s something I always suggest to anyone starting out: Start with audio-only. Get comfortable with that before diving into video. I’m not trying to talk you out of doing video, but I really believe this approach can help you a lot. Here’s why: Audio equipment is much more affordable. (Video gear can be 5–10x more expensive.) You don’t need a dedicated space to record. (Audio can be recorded in a closet. No need to worry about lighting, background, or what to wear for each episode.) It teaches you mic technique. (Use headphones to monitor your voice, volume, and speaking habits.) You’ll build fluency faster. (Focusing only on audio helps you develop your speech patterns—and any issues are easier to fix in editing.) There are many more benefits, but I’ll leave it at that. Just think about it. If you’re set on starting with video, go for it! Just remember, you'll still need to learn the audio side of things—so why not ease into it and enjoy the process? P.S. Since 2021, I’ve had my own podcast (audio-only). I do it for fun, and it saves me a lot of time and money. If I ever decide to switch to video, I know I’ll be well-prepared on the audio front. Hi, I am starting an informational podcast about anything, but I know almost nothing about editing and what a good software for that is. I am trying to keep it on the cheaper side right now so that I don’t loose interest, what would y’all recommend?

Hi thanks.
What’s the best affordable, intro recoding equipment? I’m also looking to record rap vocals.

What’s your budget? Where will you be recording? Is the room already acoustically treated? You’ll need a microphone, interface, monitoring headphones and acoustic treatment if you don’t already have that. It goes without saying that you’ll need a quiet space to record otherwise you’re into a vocal booth but that’s not really beginner equipment.

We started a podcast. 2 ladies, usually in the same room. Sometimes next to each other. Sometimes across from each other. Want to keep good audio without breaking the bank. And video set up from several angles that all feeds into one place to make editing not a nightmare. Suggestions?

Two people in the same room, you'll want two dynamic mics. The Shure SM58 is the gold standard for not super expensive and indestructible as it's the standard stage mic. This is an XLR mic, because when you record two mics you'll need an audio interface/field recorder. The zoom P4 is cheap and cheerful and ideal for podcasters. It will record to SD or to your computer, and even has room for two more mics (though in that case you'll only get four isolated tracks when you record to SD, mixed stereo only to the computer). It also has headphone jacks for each participant. Add some XLR cables and some closed back headphones (Superlux will do the trick, or some wired earbuds you have lying around) and the sound part is done and dusted. If you do remote recording, you'd need an audio interface on both ends. Or, instead of two XLR mics, get one mic that has XLR and USB, like the atr2100x. Take that one on the road. For video, honestly just start with whatever webcam, GoPro or phone you have. Try and buy lights before you upgrade the camera. A setup like this requires you to sync the audio in post. That's life if you want high quality audio for affordable prices. (Also, it's still how Hollywood rolls.) There are wireless mics that plug into iphones, but the quality will leave a lot to be desired. (Also note that recording audio on a video device is typically limited to stereo, so two mics max.) Don't forget mic stands, and don't forget to clap when you start recording (get a clapperboard if you want to feel fancy).
