On a personal note, I have some JCPenney "Home" sheets that have been wonderful. They are around a decade old, get washed frequently and have not pilled, shrunk, or noticeably faded. They are stained a bit from my husband passing out covered in work dirt. They are still smooth and soft.

The Basics of Bedding...?
I deal with a lot of bedding but keep in mind preferences matter a lot,
Microfiber and bamboo are trendy but are not better than cotton in comfort and are worse for the environment in the way they are produced and age.
Threadcount is how slippery the sheets feel on skin, if the threadcount is low then they'll feel pretty rough like a fabric tote bag, too high then they can come off the bed much easier, don't breathe as well making you feel hot, wrinkle very quickly, and can be difficult to launder. Another complication is what each brand calls threadcount might not be industry standard and can be manipulated to make their specific product appear better.
Jersey/cotton knit sheets feel like a t shirt and while they can be really comfortable they don't have a long lifespan and can develop wear much faster, my cat jumping on my bed snagged the fabric almost immediately.
Blankets are light, fold up and come in different patterns and colours, they're an alternative to heavy duvets or quilts but a step above flat sheets.
Quilts/coverlets are made from sheets stitched together with some padding, they're a step above blankets but still lighter than duvets.
Duvets are heavy covers filled with either down feathers or down alternative (synthetic fluff), down is very warm so a good option for cold winters but at the same time difficult to use during summer so you'll need to pack it away, down alternative can be used all year while still being warm and is the top pick for people with allergies. Duvets shouldn't be used without a cover because they're not made to be washed repeatedly, down shouldn't be washed at all and just spot clean if needed and down alternative shouldn't be washed more than once a year.
