Is MSc Mathematics and Finance from Imperial that good?
The number is probably wrong. From my year I can think of 20% of the cohort going straight to HFs or Prop Firms off the top of my head. The total number would be around 25% I reckon, and my year wasn't particularly out of line I believe. Everyone "really likes buyside". That's why it's very competitive, and hard to get into. The total headcount of the industry is really small, buyside is tiny. If you think you'll magically find a course where 100% of the students go to work for Jane Street think again. If you're worried that it's not the right course for you that's a separate discussion entirely. If you're worried that it's not good enough to get interviews you're wrong, but once you get the interview it's on you. More on reddit.com

Quant Guide 2022: Imperial College London - Risk.net
January 25, 2023 - The UK programme sees its position as the top-ranked European university usurped, however, by the Sorbonne, which edges Imperial into fifth position overall. Popular aspects of the course, Jacquier says, have recently included elements involving data, machine learning and algorithmic trading. With the addition of a new core 20-hour ‘Python for finance’ course, as well as ‘Quantum computing in finance’ and ‘Data science for fintech, regtech and suptech’ electives, remote teaching is down to 30%, versus 50% last year.

Pre-Reading List 2023-24 for Imperial College London MSc in Mathematics and Finance program | QuantNet
November 15, 2023 - There are of course many other useful programming languages and computing environment (R, C#, Java, MATLAB, S+), but a large part of the financial industry (banks, hedge funds, regulators) seem to be now shifting towards a combination of C++ for speed and Python for ease of use and compatibility and for its wide-ranging libraries. At the interface between Computing, Mathematics and Statistics, Machine Learning has become an essential tool in the financial industry, and a good overview is available at OECD (2021), Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Big Data in Finance: Opportunities, Challenges, and Implications for Policy Makers. The Imperial College MSc in Mathematical Finance is both highly theoretical and very practical.

But even so, you would still be well-positioned for applying to jobs after the master's. On balance, I think the course has been very enjoyable. Being in London, Imperial is in a great city and I'd highly recommend making the most of it. For people who enjoy lots of pure maths, that's exactly the experience you'll get, with a little bit of finance and programming colour to it (Python and C++).

I designed the materials to be beginner friendly, 'applied' and 'holistic' so that you can start applying your skills quickly to solve practical programming problems. It introduces not only Python and programming, but also good software engineering practice and using git for version control.

r/FinancialCareers on Reddit: MSc Financial Technology at Imperial
March 29, 2024 -

Hello everyone!

I recently got an offer to study MSc Financial Technology at Imperial College London. I have done an undergraduate degree in Computer Science from a semi-target university (ex: Durham, Bristol) and graduated last August 2023.

I am currently working as a Software Engineer at a big tech company. My plan is to pursue the masters to switch into IBD (specifically TMT so I can leverage my tech background) or a Quantitative role (ex: Quant Trader, Quant Analyst).

I have also done spring weeks in 3 BB banks and a consulting internship in one of the Big 4.

The MSc in Financial Technology has basically the similar foundation and core modules (*listed below) as their normal MSc in Finance however also has coding modules which includes C++ and Computational Finance in its electives. This is why I chose this course instead since it would give me more flexibility.

Also looking on LinkedIn most of the previous students in MSc Financial Technology have gone into Quant roles but I also see a few in IBD (2/3).

I also got an offer for MSc Computational Finance in UCL, however its is fully quant focused and I haven’t seen anyone on Linkedin breaking into IBD through this course.

So would you say I should go ahead with this masters or should I chose between an MSc Computational Finance or MSc Finance which would limit me to either apply to IBD or Quant roles but not both?

Appreciate any help, thanks!!
