r/applehelp on Reddit: Apple Refusing to refund accidental $50 purchase
August 25, 2018 -

I was using my phone today and there was an in-app as popped up for a paid subscription. There was a slight delay and when I hit my home button, it ended up letting the payment go through even though I had no intention of making the purchase. I contacted Apple twice, via chat and phone and they refused my refund both times. I contacted them as soon as the purchase was made. Will I have any issues if I dispute/void the purchase with my credit card company in regards to my Apple account? I've only been an iPhone user since May. With Google Play, refunds were no questions asked.

EDIT: I also cancelled the subscription as soon as it happened. If this was a $5-10 charge, I wouldn't really care. But $50 is ridiculous.

I’ve never seen the iTunes and App Store billing department dispute a charge like that. Did you go through the Apple Support app?

I was just neck deep in the same problem - took me a couple hours but it was finally resolved. TL;DR Apple Support may not help you out the first time to cancel an accidental app purchase. Have faith, stay civil and mention that you've seen on Reddit that others have had the same kind of purchase . Always try to get a senior person who has the ability to offer a refund in the first place. I was completing a jog while using my RunKeeper app. I hit "end run" on the app, and as I was putting my phone away in my pocket, I pressed the home button. Suddenly, I heard that "purchase authenticated" jingle. It was very bright (I am in Arizona) and with the sun's glare I did not see an in-app promotion pop up as I was touching my home key. Ugh. Thought it would be a quick fix but "report a problem" didn't have an option to immediately cancel the mistaken transaction. The next morning, l got on the Apple Support chat. The first person I was chatting to eventually told me: "I wish I could refund those orders for you today. But, after carefully reviewing your case, we’ve determined the purchase doesn't meet the conditions for a refund*."* "I am really sorry, I see that your account is in good standing*. However, the refund request which you have made now does not meet the requirements of iTunes terms and conditions."* After I doth protest: "I am really sorry, I wish I could cancel the charges for you. Unfortunately, we do not have an option to refund the charges. Otherwise, I would have definitely help you with this." Had I not been on vacation and had a free afternoon, I might have given up at this point and pursued a different channel (phone support or my bank). Instead I asked for a manager and after 25+ minutes on hold, I was finally chatting to another person. This person identified himself as a " iTunes Store Senior Advisor". I proceeded to recount the situation (despite hearing from the first person that the senior advisor had already reviewed my case). I told him (truthfully) that I'd been an iPhone user since 1st gen for good measure. Eventually, he said: "Thank you for waiting, I’ve reviewed your case and have issued you a refund for the subscription charge. I've also canceled your subscription. Within 30 days, $19.99 USD should be posted to the payment method used to make the purchase." Phew. The final chat log time stamp noted: "Duration 65 minutes 7 seconds". All due to the momentary intersection of a dim screen, a bright sun and an inopportunely timed pop-up. This is my first post ever, and I'm writing this to help others that get caught up in this delay tactic from apple support. It's ridiculous that they'd refuse a cancellation/ refund of a subscription when not even 24 hrs have passed of a 365 day subscription. Maybe it's time for a Pixel/Android?
