r/NoContract on Reddit: I’ve been trying to activate My SafeLink Sim card for weeks. I don’t know what to do.
January 29, 2024 -

I’ve been talking with customer support and they are no help. Apparently the IMEI number might be different. I provided them, but I doubt it and they are unable to activate the Sim card and are telling me to buy a new one from TracFone. My question is I have an eSIM With Verizon that be messing with the current physical Sim card and do I or in order to switch from safe link to a different lifeline do I need to wait 60 days? If that made no sense, I mean, would my current Verizon ES Sim could possibly be messing with my physical Verizon Sim card that’s from safely? I’m pretty much done with Saffell and would like to switch to a different carrier because fuck them

What phone do you have? If it shares the IMEI between the pSIM and eSIM, the Verizon system won't allow the IMEI to exist in two places. You might look at Life Wireless. Uses AT&T and doesn't tie the SIM to the device.

SafeLink has been distastrous since the Verizon takeover. If you are able to switch to a different Lifeline provider I promise you can't do any worse. I bought a new Moto G Power from SafeLink when they said I had to switch to a Verizon SIM or lose service. Not one day has passed where it didn't randomly lose signal multiple times. Customer Service is useless. Also: Tethering)Hotspot hasn't worked once since I switched from the AT&T sim and Safelink's Moto (which has crippled specs compared to the same unbranded phone) randomly takes screenshots every damn day without input). It's not user error. I am an Android hobbyist and had no problems getting two different BYOD phones from Xiaomi to connect flawlessly on SafeLink, volte, hotspot & wifi calling all worked. Now nothing works. I would switch to a different Lifeline provider in a heartbeat but I would have to re-qualify financially and I am earning slightly more money now than when I was approved. So I'll stick with it till my contract expires. Incidentally Verizon data hasn't been stable enough to use GPS ever! Fortunately I put a TextNow Sim in my old phone and leave that in the car. It now comes with "Free Essential Data" and works great with both Maps and Waze. (Essential Data also lets you use some common email and messaging programs for free). TN is a great backup if you are going to be stuck with Lifeline for a while. Five bucks for the sim, another five to lock the number in for a year so it doesn't get reassigned if you forget to use it. The TMO signal is great where I am located and since I locked the number I can get most but not all verification codes. (Some apps and sites block all VOIP numbers including Whatsapp but I received most codes).

r/NoContract on Reddit: Possible workaround to get Safelink service on eSIM
July 3, 2023 -

Hello Everyone! Just wanted to share my experience on how I got my mother’s Safelink ACP service activated on an iPhone 14 she was gifted by her children.

Safelink uses Tracfone branded service (not Straight Talk, Simple Mobile, Total, Net10 etc., even though they are all the same company).

I wanted service on her iPhone 14 since she had a crappy TCL phone beforehand and wanted her to have the ability to use iMessage and FaceTime to communicate better with her kids and grandchildren.

I initially tried going into Tracfone’s website, under “Activate” , “Keep Your Own Phone” and clicking on “I want to keep my number” like I normally did with previous phones/SIM cards.

However, it kept on giving me a strange error that said “You’re number is currently inactive, please try activating your service before transferring your number”. I tried calling customer service and to no surprise they were not helpful at all. They told me that Safelink does not support their “eSIM program”.

What I decided to do was activate the iPhone 14 with Tracfone’s $15 unlimited talk and text plan ($10 if you choose Autopay) with a new number then proceeded to calling the Safelink enrollment team at 1-800-378-1684 and telling them to move her enrollment ID to the new number. I did not mention her old phone number at all, only the new phone number assigned by Tracfone and her Safelink enrollment ID. (If you do give them your current Safelink number, they will try to do a number transfer and will tell you the same thing about their eSIM program and how it will not work).

I was placed on hold for about 5 minutes and to my surprise, the rep tells me he has successfully attached the enrollment ID to the new Tracfone number with the eSIM! He told me that he was going to try and get the plan changed but if he could not, I would have to wait until the next month to see the benefits.

As another surprise, after a few hours, I texted the word “Balance” to 611-611 and received a message stating that the service end date was in 2024 and that the phone had unlimited data. So he was able to get the plan updated with her ACP benefits!

YMMV on this but I am glad that I was able to get this done. Again, I am sharing this in case anyone else wants to give it a try.
