Shading Venn Diagrams (video lessons, examples, solutions)
By shading certain areas, you can clearly highlight the elements that belong to a particular set or combination of sets. The following figures show how to shade regions of Venn Diagrams for two sets: A intersect B, A union B, A’, A intersect B’, A’ intersect B, A union B’, A’ union B, A’ union B’ = (A intersect B)’, A’ intersect B’ = (A union B)’. Scroll down the page for more examples and solutions on how to shade Venn Diagrams to represent the required regions of two sets and three sets.

Shading Venn Diagrams
In a Venn diagram, you shade to represent the elements included in the set. For example, a venn diagram of just set A would be a circle (or whatever) labeled A that is all shaded in. The venn diagram of A’ would be the circle with shading outside of that circle. Suppose you have 2 sets A and B. If those two sets have common elements, then the circles for A and B need to overlap. But if A and B do not have any elements in common, then the two circles should not overlap. Either way, to represent A U B with a venn diagram, shade all of both circles. Now consider what the intersection of A and B would be in each situation. If A and B have no elements in common, then their intersection would be the empty set. The venn diagram of their intersection would show 2 non-overlapping circles with nothing shaded. But if A and B do have common elements, then the venn diagram is the two circles that overlap. The part where they overlap represents the elements they have in common. So, to represent their intersection you shade just the overlapping part. For A’ U B, you want to show that the set includes all elements not in A combined with all elements in B. All elements not in A is shading outside of circle A. All elements in B is shading all of circle B. Combining those 2 sets is shading both - everything outside of A and all of B. So if the 2 sets have common elements, then you’re shading everything except the part of A that doesn’t overlap B. But if the 2 sets do not have common elements (and thus the 2 circles do not overlap) then shade everything except all of A. More on reddit.com
