The oldest ipad might cost you more in the long run than getting a newer one right away. Think of hardware tech like a game of leapfrog. You get a device, the app gets updated. You know that eventually the app will go past what your device can do, but you still want a device that'll make it through as many jumps as it can. An older device has already moved past a few jumps and will get left behind sooner. You might end up replacing it earlier than expected, and that adds up. We’re debating which Shopify pos hardware to get for our new retail store. If it weren’t for having to buy iPad…I would hands down buy the tablet mount + the nice credit card reader with the screen. So we’re considering the POS go system.
Then I got to looking on eBay, and you can get an older iPad Air for pretty darn cheap.
My question is, how old of an iPad could I get, and still safely run the Shopify POS app?
Are there any cheaper android tablets that are proven to run the Shopify POS well?
Advise appreciated, thanks

October 30, 2024 - You likely already figured it out but the store owner will need to go into “Users and permissions” in Settings. Select you as a user. The scroll down to “Set up new or updated POS devices” under Point of Sale and tick the box.

And I will again tomorrow. I opened my retail shop 3 months ago and today midday Shopify decides anything under iOS 13 wouldn’t work nor would the apps.
Unfortunately, I’m not made of money to pay for a whole new POS set up and iPad (this one was secondhand, we’re an eco friendly shop so you know - on brand). Not to mention when I first bought the hardware, I received the tap and chip base but no reader. They claimed it was out of stock. I had to expedite the chipper because my store was opening. I’m going to lose it.
Now my iPad POS and hardware is obsolete. Next my chipper doesn’t connect with my personal iPad. They won’t expedite me a new chipper because they need to expedite this call.
Did they send notice and I miss it? Is there any recourse?

ETA - I have an iPad Pro aside from the secondhand iPad. As I mentioned above, the chipper card reader does not connect to anything else atm but Shopify wouldn’t expedite a new reader. We troubleshot it together and they agreed it was faulty despite being 3 months old

iOS 13 has been deprecated since the summer by Apple and they will not issue new security updates. You are putting your customers data at risk by using unsupported software.

Either update the iOS or buy a new iPad. As harsh as it sounds, technology keeps advancing, iOS16 is out and Shopify is a leading e-commerce platform. I wouldn’t expect anything less from them and if you’re business is not keeping up with the constant tech changes, then you’ve setup yourself for failure.

I have managed to resolve the issue, and to help everyone here who has the same issue, what I did was you have to give the shopify POS app permission to use NFC in your phone. Once thats done, you can go to the POS app > settings > set up hardware >. And you will see “Tap to pay on android” as a hardware type.

(This is a repost from the Shopify Community Forums. I haven't been able to get much help over there lately.)
We recently switched to Shopify POS and we're learning that our gen 6 iPads are not quite sufficient to operate the app without major issues. We're experiencing crashing as well as extremely laggy loading in searching products and during checkout.
We also have an iPad 10 and an iPad Air 5, both of which run the app smoothly with few complaints, but it's a tall order to have to buy 3 brand new iPads like that. We've found a good price on older open-box and refurbished models, but I'm worried we'll run into the same issues that we're having with the gen 6s.
Would anyone be willing to share the oldest generation of iPad you're running Shopify POS on, and whether you experience any performance issues?

What matters is the iOS version usually not the device. Generally stick to the rule of the devices that can run the two most recent iOS versions. 17 just come out? So technically 15/16 eventually 15 will go unsupported and I'm sure even now iOS 14 is no longer supported.
