I collect obscure words.
Ooh im gonna have fun looking through your dictionary in more detail later! I've started collecting obscure words on my notes app, and it's a lot of fun I have to say! Here's what I've collected, sorry if there's a repeat in here! Leucistic - white animals that aren't albinos Quixotic - extremely idealistic; impractical and unrealistic Myrmidon - a follower or subordinate of a powerful person, typically one who is unscrupulous or carries out orders unquestioningly. Insouciance - casual lack of concern; indifference Sybarite - a person who is self-indulgent in their fondness for sensuous luxury (hedonist-like, but not the same). Cingulomania - a strong desire to hug someone Aquiline - like an eagle (usually used to describe a hook-like nose, sometimes to describe aristocratic noses) Sibilant - a hissing sound, eg "a sibilant whisper" Echolalia - repeating someone else's words repeatedly. Used in psychiatry as a symptom for certain disorders; common in child speech development. English is such a fascinating language to dig into due to the various influences within it. My list alone has references to Greek mythology, some of Latin origin, some from French, as well as a reference to a Spanish novel. I'm always delighted when I find a text that uses a word I'm unfamiliar with. More on reddit.com

How do people get so many "unique words"?
I don't think 12000 is really unusual at all, there are a lot of common short words out there. As you play more that'll naturally go up steadily. Just anecdotally, the count on my profile page (19k) is completely different from the one that shows on the "Uniquely Your Own" achievement (27.5k), so you might want to check your achievement page for what may be your 'real' total. r/CasualConversation on Reddit: I collect obscure words.
December 14, 2021 -

I like to collect obscure words. I have them in my Obscure Word Dictionary I've been building, separated into nouns, adjectives, and verbs! So far I have 77 of them. I like to write, mainly science fiction, but all sorts of stuff really, and I love to collect things, so I figured I'd combine the two. I also collect coins, stones, and pokemon cards now because I like the art. But yeah, if you want a word you might not have heard before all you gotta do is ask! And in the meantime, anyone else out there like to collect things?

Oh, and here's a few words just for fun!

Ultracrepidarian: someone who has no special knowledge of a subject but who expresses an opinion on it.

Synastry: concurrence of starry position or influence upon two persons : similarity of condition or fortune prefigured by astrology

Clowder: a group of cats.

Oh you know what, I'll just do this. Here's my full dictionary if anyone is interested: https://imgur.com/a/6x9FXRO

Edit: You know, I have come to find that everyone, literally everyone, knows at least one or two words like this. It's actually a really special thing I think. And I love collecting them from the people I know, and that's why, I think, this reddit post feels really special to me. Like y'all are throwing out your favorite odd words, and I've added a ton to my dictionary today thanks to you guys. And it just goes to show everyone's got a little something special about them. Big thanks to everyone who is helping to add to my dictionary! Y'all are my heroes.

Pulchritudinous also originates in Latin (interesting fact: Over 60% of all English words have Greek or Latin roots!). Pulchritude is a descendant of the Latin adjective pulcher, which means "beautiful." Therefore, in English, pulchritudinous, as an adjective, means "physically attractive" or "beautiful." "Jack loves to stand in front of his mirror, staring at his pulchritudinous face." Those who've watched the TV show Schitt's Creek, are undoubtedly aware of Moira Rose's (Catherine O'Hara) extensive and unique vocabulary.

A sneaky little word that describes a feeling most people won't admit to having, Lachesism is the state of "desiring to be struck by disaster and survive; to lose all of one's belongings in a fire, to go through a cataclysmic event for the unique and terrible pleasure of doom". In short, it's the desire to come close to the end in order to renew appreciation for life.
