Hi all, I am looking to add kitchen space for my small apartment, and am looking for a counter/island for a corner about 43.5" wide. I would prefer an island like the Tornviken or Vadholma, but they are too big or small to effectively use the space.
Would a Sektion base cabinet + countertop + metal legs be possible to do without many tools or experience? The price is cheaper than the Ikea islands too, and the hardest part seems to be cutting down the countertop.
Some specific questions:
-
Does the cabinet need to be attached to the wall, or can I leave it free-standing?
-
Will 4 legs be enough, or do I need 6 to support the center better?
-
I would like to put a microwave on the shelves - would that be too heavy?
I am a total noob so any help is appreciated!
Why not order 2 bottom cupboards and piece of countertop. Replace ikea’s plastic legs with 6 capita legs. This wouldn’t require you to anything more than a couple wall brackets to secure it.
Totally doable. I would spend a little more and use 24"+18" - the m-wave will fit into one, and you can have storage drawers in the other...unless you're looking at the overhang for dining/extra work space. if so, I would use a 30" cab to have space for a stool.
every cabinet is customizable - find a combination of shelf and drawer that works for you.
Pictures shown are from a staged unit. I currently have no belongings after being a digital nomad for a year. I would rather a kitchen island/bar than the table shown.
I cook a lot but don’t often sit for a proper meal unless I have guests. I think this could add counter space and separate the room into a “kitchen zone” and a “living room” zone.
I’m looking to create a DIY kitchen island by placing an IKEA countertop over a freestanding cabinet. The idea is to keep it easy to take apart so I can move it from apartment to apartment. I want it to function as a kitchen counter, storage, and workstation.
Thinking of using an IKEA countertop like the HEMTRÄSK (61.5" L x 34" D x 1 1/8" thick) on top of something like the KNOXHULT base cabinet (48" L x 24" D x 36" H).
Has anyone tried something like this?
