Oh boy. I cannot recommend Sophos any longer. I used to think they were great, but once I started working with their product, it has made have strong negative feelings towards them. We have many Sophos products in my enviroment, including Sophos Central AND Enterprise console. I believe the "Enterprise Console" is the older AV product they have and "Sophos Central" is their new one. Enterprise console is on prem only and the Sophos Central is cloud only. I can say Enterprise console was not friendly to use. Their GUI is very overwhelming and things are in very odd places. I also found there were many "Gotchas" within there. It gave us a good overview, but some commands didnt work well, such as updating the machine. Duplicate machines also were a plague. It just overall felt extremely deprecated. Sophos Central is cloud, so I have a web GUI to help management my clients and servers. It has taken the burden of having to plan updates for the AV as it auto updates itself (you can turn this off, which I do advise to do so). You can also tell it to reinstall the software from there, but it doesnt work too well IMO. It does a better job with a overview of our machines and being able to monitor all threats and events each machine gets. It also allows us to push zero days to the clients without them being on our network, only on some sort of internet connection. Before I get to why I cannot recommend Sophos Central, I want to say each environment is different and so are the skill sets. These are solely based on my experience with them and my feelings of how certain things should operate and levels of expectation for the cost of their products. Sophos Central should come with many disclaimers and they should up their "minimum requirements" as their products are BEEFY. I am currently investigating why my Windows 10 machines takes twice as long to boot to desktop when Sophos AV is installed. In April of this year they updated their product. This update was a rather huge one compared to others, they were removing a Service and replacing it with a slightly similar named service. Well this update didnt take well to 25 endpoints and caused them to stop getting any updates. Their solution? Ill list it: Boot into safemode Run .bat file to disable tamper protection( as the update also broke the ability for us to tell the endpoint to disable it via web GUI) Boot into normal mode Uninstall Sophos Restart Install Sophos While 25 machines isnt a nightmare, but if you are like me and those 25 machines are 100's of miles away, its going to rather upsetting. So we plan to have each user come into their local office for their update. Keep in mind I was not able to fully test this before working this as none of these machines were local. We started only doing one at a time as we couldnt say this was the absolute fix. The 3 step failed, the devices are not wanting to uninstall the old version. We now have to get the machine back and call Sophos and ask whys the problem now(this happened to three different machines, three times in a row with all the same failure). All while 25 machines are all vulnerable. They state this is expected behavior for their products. I can confirm this because when we updated our Sophos MDM server, they failed to tell us that some phones wont take it well and break. They did. Now this may be way more than you are wanting and part of this is probably a rant as I am always running around putting our Sophos fires. But I do have a lot of experience working with their products, so feel free to message me if you are a more specific question.

Are you running Sophos Enterprise Console or Sophos Central? Sophos Central Why did you choose one over the other? It's not even a choice. Hot newness or tired old shit? We wanted new features and ongoing development. Are you happy with the console you are running? Overall yes, although it has flaws. Things I like: Sophos Central includes a MAJOR improvement in detection and removal capabilities. It can find and catch things that Sophos Enterprise will not. A LOT OF THEM. With the old Sophos Enterprise, sometimes even when Sophos could find a malicious file it would quarantine it but refuse to delete it. You would have to unquarantine the file and delete it yourself directly on the client device. It was absurd. Sophos Central gives me a button in the web UI to click that says "Yes delete that asshole's keygen" (may not be verbatim) Policy changes take effect on all clients in a few seconds. When we used the Sophos Enterprise Console it was effectively impossible to push changes to a client despite the feature existing (I think it was like the 'close door' elevator buttons). if I whitelisted a website, we often had to reinstall Sophos on an endpoint to force it to recognize the updated policy. Support was useless and offered no suggestions to improve this. Similar to the above item, the console has much more up-to-date info about the clients Sophos Central Alerts are much easier to read, and it's much easier to drill down into a client. The Enterprise Console is just a shit GUI designed way too cheaply. They probably didn't even hire a UI guy and just made a DBA design it or something. Sophos Central supports MFA for admins Web console much more accessible than the Enterprise Console Things I don't like: Limited RBAC capabilities, we want our end user support team to be able to resolve alerts on workstations but not servers, and we don't want them to be able to make policy changes. There is no way to set up their accounts this way. Different behavior for servers vs. workstations, just some weird things they moved around in the UI for no apparent reason (such as the Root Cause Analysis feature). As usual with AV we had to disable any scanning of network files because otherwise network file servers were unusable.

r/sophos on Reddit: Uninstall all Sophos AV Components from Enterprise Console managed endpoints
August 8, 2022 -

Hi all,

We are using Sophos Enterprise Console (SEC) to manage our on-premise Sophos Endpoint Security & Control deployment.

As the product is EOL in July 2023 we will, most likely, be moving away from Sophos altogether. Therefore, we're looking for process where we can remove Sophos (and all of its components) from approx. 500 endpoints.

I have found an article (https://support.sophos.com/support/s/article/KB-000033686?language=en_US) which looks promising but I would imagine the value extracted from the Registry, for example:

{01423865-551B-4C59-B44A-CC604BC21AF3}

would be different for each endpoint (can someone confirm if this is the case?).

Has anyone has a similar experience in carrying out this sort of task? Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Best regards,

John P
