What is a straw man?
A scarecrow or a stuffed training dummy. The fallacy is when you change the person's argument to one you can argue against rather than the one actually made. For example, if someone were to propose raising the speed limit by 5, and the response was "You don't think we should have a speed limit?" that's a straw man. It's analogous to attacking a straw dummy instead of attacking the human. More on reddit.com

Pretending somebody said something dumber than they really said, and then criticizing that instead of criticizing what they actually said. If you say it can be bad for one's health to eat too much sweets, and I reply "Really? You think I'll die from a candy bar? Ridiculous." then I'm using the strawman fallacy. More on reddit.com

September 11, 2023 - This politically neutral straw man fallacy is a good one to start with. It shows the scenario of a teacher arguing for more math. The term's origins are a matter of debate, though the usage of the term in rhetoric suggests a human figure made of straw that is easy to knock down or destroy—such as a military training dummy, scarecrow, or effigy.
