This is the second instalment in the Al-Nahda Timeline (main point of divergence being the "success" of the Arab Spring). LORE! Interwar & WW2 The Turkish fail in their war for independence. Subsequently, the British and French decide to redraft the Treaty of Sevres to "ensure peace in the region". This involves adjustment of L.O.N. mandates. The French Mandate for Syria and the Lebanon and the British Mandate for Palestine are merged into a singular entity simply named the "Mandate for Greater Syria" (the 'greater' is soon dropped.) In coming years nationalist sentiments in Jazira spreads to Syria, resulting in the creation of their own Hashemite-lead monarchy under Franco-British suzerainty. Unlike Jazira however, minority groups (Jews, Alawites, Christians, Druze etc.) are instrumental in keeping prolonged tolerance of colonial supervision. Syria is a vital ally in WW2, assisting the British in reasserting the latter's control over Iraq during this period. As a reward they're granted full independence in 1946 as the Hashemite Kingdom of Syria. The Cold War, Zionism & Ba'athism The Holocaust sends Jewish migrants into Palestine, slight local tensions force the hand of the monarchy to take action. The former state of Jerusalem is partitioned into the city itself, an Arab majority state named "Amman", and a smaller state retaining the name to be primarily settled by Jewish migrants but still having other sizeable groups. Ultimately Zionism doesn't go to such lengths to cause the Nakba and further ethnoreligious conflicts. However, Ba'athism sees an explosion with great support from the Soviets in dismantling Syria. In turn the Hashemite monarchy becomes highly despotic, seeing western support after the 14 July Coup in Jazira. Information Age After the end of the cold war, western support begins thinning. To maintain control the monarchy only strengthens its grip, rights being stripped particularly from minority groups. Calls for reform outside Ba'athist circles begin turning into demands for unconditional deposition of the monarchy. The stage is set for a political crisis. Syrian Civil War By 2011 there are widespread national protests for change. Lethal force used by monarch Abdullah II leads to his assassination. His heir, Hussein, being only 17 at the time lights the match and Syria is plunged into civil war. Initially the monarchy holds out as opposition becomes divided between separatists, Assadists republicans and other reformist groups. However, the surge of ISIS support sees much of the resistance rallying under a generally pro-Republic united front to defeat distracted royalist forces.
