r/PhD on Reddit: Your take on Taguette Software for Qualitative Analysis ?
May 27, 2025 -
I've encountered the open source software Taguette. I'd like to hear how effective it is for qualitative data analysis. I understand Nvivo Is great, but how effective is Taguette for just coding based analysis methods. Not intending to do AI or visualisation support, just analysis of textual content.

Taguette has a major limitation for serious qualitative analysis: the complete lack of hierarchical coding. You literally cannot nest codes or organize them into categories, which makes methodologies like Thematic Analysis and Grounded Theory extremely difficult to execute properly. In Thematic Analysis, you need to organize codes into themes and subthemes. In Grounded Theory, you're constantly refining codes into higher-level theoretical concepts. Taguette just can't handle this - you're stuck with a flat list of codes that you have to organize mentally. That said, if you're doing a quick tagging project or basic coding exercise, its simple design and the fact that it's free is certainly a plus. But if you're planning to do any analysis that requires structured coding hierarchies, Taguette will actively work against your methodology. You'll hit this limitation immediately with most established qualitative approaches.
