I used to work for a retailer that sold North Face. It all comes in individual wrapped plastic anyways. Same goes for Nike, Under Amour, Patagonia, literally everything you buy comes in a plastic bag that gets thrown in the trash and not recycled.

I can't speak to these specific jackets, but I can speak to recent brand build quality: I have been extremely disappointed with North Face's build quality, even on their "real" gear (gear not targeted at people buying North Face as just a fashion statement). Meanwhile, Patagonia continues to impress me with their fits, build quality, and performance. Are they pricey? Yeah, but they also still offer a stellar warranty - it's basically "lifetime", or as close as you can get to that these days, where if it's fairly new (a few years old), they'll either replace it or repair it for free, and if it's older, they'll offer to repair it for what has been pretty reasonable costs (imo). All that said, fit is still very important. The highway quality build and warranty doesn't mean a damn thing if you don't like the way the clothing fits in the first place. So I would suggest - if you haven't tried them both on already - to go try them on pick whichever one feels most comfortable to you. My objections to North Face is more that I remember the kind of high quality gear they made when I was growing up, and now it feels like they're targeting people who never even go car camping (in terms of gear build quality).
