I have just finished watching The Witcher on Netflix and I am completely lost as to the timeline of events depicted in the series. It is obvious to me that Ciri's escape is happening in the present, More on scifi.stackexchange.com

Witcher Season 3 is so much worse than the last two seasons - did they not pay for good writers and editors?
It's painful to watch: a lot of boring and pointless scenes, dialogues are badly written, and what is this with characters constantly congratulating each other on how amazing they are ? There is a simple rule in writing: show, don't tell, but apparently writers on the show missed that class. Season 1 was good, season 2 left me worried. I could only finish 1 episode of season 3, just can't watch it anymore. They had great source material and that's the best they could do with it ? I'm not even asking you to follow the books or the game, just make a good show. More on reddit.com

It may be because I haven’t played the games or read the books, but I found that throughout the entire series I never knew who anyone’s allegiances were to, and who the kingdoms were. For instance I don’t know what the point/goal of redania is, and I also thought nilfgard was a faceless enemy that we haven’t even seen yet, just some empire in a far away land. I also have struggled with where everyone is located and what’s north and south. I hope it’s just been the bad writing and other people have felt the same, and not that I’m just a very stupid viewer More on reddit.com

July 1, 2023 -

Just finished watching part 1 of season 3, and it just seems overall of a much poorer quality than the last two seasons.

  • The dialogue is rushed, the editing is sloppy

  • The visual effects for instance - the first scene where Geralt cuts down the bounty hunters - such obviously fake blood on screen

  • Characters have become poorly defined, or losing definition - Jen treats Ciri terribly with her fellow witches while offering Ciri no chance to transition, Djikistra is easily fooled by Radovid, despite being a spy master, and having been reasonably effective in the last season. Stregobor offers himself up for trial with an unnecessary throwaway line

  • Radovid himself is constantly referred to as someone who is way more intelligent, yet not much has been on show to prove that point

I agree with a lot of people that Henry Cavill seems perfect for this role, but perhaps he has jumped ship at the right time. Probably only going to get worse from here.

November 6, 2025 - Is there any point in watching this if the Witcher himself isn't in it? Netflix should have known better; they've taken away what made the show captivating in the first place. I feel like the soul of the series walked away with Cavill. ... Strangely enough, this goof describes the downfall of the series perfectly. Season 1: 10 Stars, simply amazing, beyond expectations. Answer: “The Witcher” by Netflix came on TV soon after the long series “Game of Thrones” finished, which had disappointed everyone. So it was a very popular new fantasy that filled in a hole, and the first season was excellent. Then season 3 of “The Witcher” came on last year and was a big disapp...

‘The Witcher’ Season 3, Part 2 Review: Henry Cavill Flees A Sinking Ship
November 18, 2024 - Ciri heads back to Aretuza and Geralt gets in a fight with Vilgefortz that he loses rather spectacularly, though the show does a perplexingly awful job at showing us how bad the Witcher’s wounds truly are. The choreography here is not up to standards set in Season 1.

In an interview with one of the showrunners, Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, she says:

Is this crazy? Like, is it crazy to do that with this story? Is it crazy to say that Ciri's (Freya Allan) story takes place over two weeks, Yennefer's takes place over, you know, it's like 70 years. Geralt's (Henry Cavill) takes place over 20 years. Is that crazy?

If she was, say 20, when she went to Aretuza, she would be 90 towards the end of the show. Perhaps not 3 lifetimes, but certainly 2.

As I watched, the details I caught that led to realizing the [timelines] were:

  • During the mage's council discussing where to send the new mages, they refer to Calanthe (Ciri's grandmother) as a young, promising princess [Yennefer]
  • [Geralt] is fighting the shtriga for King Foltest, but we cut to [Yennefer] who walks past a child Foltest who is pestering his sister.
  • [Geralt] attends Ciri's mother's betrothal/wedding where we find out she is pregnant.
  • Once [Geralt] and [Yennefer] meet, when next we see them together during the dragon hunt there are flashbacks of several meetings that occurred in the meantime.
  • Finally, [Yennefer] is talked into helping the mages defend Cintra, before anything in [Ciri's] time.

Those are just the ones that I caught and I wasn't trying to pay too much attention once I realized the timeline differences. This Screen Rant page includes many other smaller details that I missed. It also includes this timeline from dates in the novels:

1170 - The Great Cleansing of Elves
1173 - Yennefer is born
1190 - Yennefer attends Aretuza
1230 - Yennefer becomes mage of Aedirn (approx.)
1232 - Calanthe named queen
1233 - Calanthe wins The Battle of Hochebuz
1234 - Geralt meets Renfri
1235 - The Usurper overthrows Nilfgaard
1237 - Princess Pavetta is born
1252 - Princess Pavetta is married
1253 - Ciri is born
1257 - The Usurper is killed
1260 - Yennefer and Geralt meet (approx.)
1263 - Nilfgaard invades Cintra
