r/etymology on Reddit: Why does 'thesaurus' sound like a type of dinosaur?
January 23, 2015 -
Is the 'saur' the same in both?
Top answer 1 of 5

Almost certainly not. "Thesaurus comes from Greek" θησαυρός (thēsauros) "treasure, treasury". The "saur" of dinosaurs comes from Greek σαύρα (saurā) "lizard". The ultimate etymology of these two Greek words is disputed, but they are almost certainly unrelated.

Theo TheSaurus: The Dinosaur Who Loved Big Words: Johannes, Shelli R., Moran, Mike: 9780593205518: Amazon.com: Books
I was cooking dinner at the time (which is very rare!), so instead of walking back to his room, I did the most natural Mom thing I could think of—and hollered back down the hall. "Use a thesaurus." "A what?" He hollered back again. "A thesaurus!" "A WHAT?" "A thesaurus! The. SAURUS. As in the dinosaur!" I immediately got a vision of a little dinosaur who loved spouting off "colossal" words.
