Tropical looking isn't easy to quantify... There are hardy hibiscus that have a similar look to the tropical ones that can be planted in the ground outside in my WI zone (5a). To have true tropicals you may have to move things in for the winter, into a sunny spot, or choose things that can go dormant in an out of the way place (like your basement). Tropical Plants for a Cold Climate Garden - Here She Grows
November 5, 2024 - On the far right is a Musa basjoo banana plant that I’ve since dug up and stored in the basement for the winter. At digging time, it was seven feet tall with several pups shooting off the sides. Amaranth ‘Dreadlocks,’ grown from seed, drapes the arbor and Datura ‘Yellow Ballerina,’ (on left) also grown from seed, peaks into the photo. All give a wild tropical look to this space that I loved looking out onto all summer.

June 22, 2024 - Extended temperatures below 28°F (-2°C) will cause severe damage to T. formosana, so protect it in colder climates. That said, many cultivars are hybrids of the two species, such as ‘Tojen’ and ‘Sinonome,’ both hardy to zone five. Toad lily flowers also make great cut flowers for arrangements or to stand out on their own. In shaded gardens, delicate silver-fronded ferns evoke a tropical oasis. Japanese-painted ferns in the shadows of the garden are sure to lend a tropical look. When planted alongside big-leaved plants like hostas, Astilboides tabularis, or Farfugium japonicum, the delicate silver-frosted fronds of the painted fern add a pop of contrast.

r/gardening on Reddit: Tropical (or tropical-looking) plants that can survive a snowy winter?
November 24, 2019 -
Hey all! i just moved from Florida to Michigan and i'm missing all my beautiful plants. I can't seem to find any plants at stores that can survive below 60-50°f...but it's still not regularly out of the 40s yet. I'm looking for plants that can thrive in the summer and at least grow back the next spring. I don't need them to bloom all year long, I just want to be sure they won't completely die when it gets cold out. any suggestions help, i'm looking to start planting in a month or two (: 🌱
