The End of the Israel Exception | Foreign Affairs
2 weeks ago - Propelled in part by a formidable pro-Israel political lobby in the United States, it has persisted without substantial modification. Washington still exhibits extreme deference not only to Israeli leaders’ judgment but also to their domestic political needs. It provides, without conditions, massive amounts of military aid: a 2016 memorandum of understanding promised $3.8 billion per year, a daily transfer of over $10 million in American taxpayers’ money, and Congress regularly adds more.

The American investment in Israel was, and still is, extremely good for them - it's just that "them" is the ruling class of the US, and not most of its people. The US supports Israel exactly because it furthers its imperialist goals in the region and in general (and in addition makes a nice buck for its arms manufacturers).
