How lucky! It’s great! I’m going to start with the hallway. I love the wallpaper! It’s perfect and can be upgraded to a modern feel with very simple changes! First I’d keep the wallpaper, but if you really don’t want to, consider keeping stripes! Similar colors. The greens go terrific with your fp teal. So like in the rug photo a blue green plus a green green look great or on your wallpaper it’s a yellow green and green green. Yellow green is so good with teal and really all greens look great with it. Then for styling: you coukd go black and white with it which modernizes the color and the antiques like immediately! So like a cute black modern fixture and sconces and cute geometric or mod black and white runner would look so, so great. Or you might go with brass and a style that straddles the modern and traditional like this fun flower chandelier. You coukd do simple brass or shell sconces. For rug stripes in bold colors are very modern. And bring things up to date really well! I’ll also suggest Lisa Holt on YouTube and this video. It’s all about mixing modern and antique. Very helpful advice. However it’s more modern and less antique in furnishes but the home setting is very antique… but still good helpful ideas! Answer from jesushx on reddit.com

Mid century modern living room - advice needed
It's ok to not have everything from the same era. You can bring cohesion through a consistent color palette which you have already done. All the warm colors look good together and the room still reads as MCM. I think an Eames chair would not work space-wise, what you have now fits nicely. I think the rug works too but if you wanted to bring in an accent color an olive green would contrast nicely with all the browns/rust. And then some art and throw pillows will pull it all together. r/DesignMyRoom on Reddit: How Can I Update My Antique Decor for a Contemporary, Minimal Vibe?
January 21, 2025 -

I want to keep some of the antiques but combine them with modern feel; I'm thinking:

- Lose the wallpaper in hallway, paint it to teal/salvia to match fireplace colour

- Get a big cream/white rug / modern with geometrical shapes

- Change upholstery of the lounge set to green-ish or something bold (or replace it with a modern sofa)

- Change ceiling lamps to modern ones

- Get some wall art

- Get some drapes

- Get some glass minimal vases and other accessories

I realize my case is an equivalent of interior design boss battle, but I'll gladly accept any help. 😅

Secondly I’ll work with the living area. Actually brown and teal work really well together in a color palette and such a bold color combinations are is instantly modern. I’d go with a much bolder rug. I love the rug you picked out with the subtle geometrics and maybe it would be terrific in the other room? I kinda think it’d be terrific in there. But a striped rug or striped geometric in here instantly ties it together and says modern immediately. I’d just float the furniture more in the center than on the walls. And maybe mive the cabinet elsewhere. It currently competes visually too much with the gorgeous fireplace and it’s a shame. I’d get a big art over the fireplace more proportional to the fp. See the Lisa holt video for great tips! Then I’d just style it very simply. Like see the bottom three photos. Simple interesting pillows and sparce decor/ careful composition like the left, or just small repeated same pillows like in the other two. I really thought about the coffee table. Whether to switch it to modern, but it’s so unique I just like it… so for now I think I’d keep that and let the rug and styling do all the work here! For lighting see the choices in hallway board, and also I think Edwardian chandeliers look terrific, too! Fits the eclectic look very well. This might seem maximalist but it’s actually very restrained… it seems like the home calls for that, imo…
