People also ask

Should I wear a suit or a tuxedo to a wedding?
A tuxedo is the traditional choice for evening or formal weddings, while a suit works for semi-formal or daytime ceremonies. If the invitation mentions “black tie,” “black tie optional,” or “formal,” a tuxedo is the safest and most appropriate option.

Should I buy or rent my prom tuxedo?
Buying a prom tuxedo can actually cost less than renting, especially with private-label styles that offer full outfits for the price of a typical rental. Renting is convenient if you prefer a one-time outfit, while buying gives you better fit and ownership for future events.

Advice on buying first tux for wedding as groom
First off, congrats! Rest assured pretty much every groom (myself included) had tons of questions. I’ve been to more weddings than I can count before I turned 16. Now, almost 20 years later, I’ve been to dozens of weddings and for a lot of them, the groom … let’s just say had no idea how menswear worked. And I’m guessing it’s because of a combination of 1) They didn’t really care 2) Their bride, who doesn’t know a lot about traditional wedding menswear, told them to “match the bridesmaids” and called it a day and 3) Lots of men today have literally not been expected to dress up nice in their lives. And I recognize that a lot of “good” wedding menswear is 1) cost prohibitive 2) Complicated and 3) Very particular to men’s cishet American culture. So this is just basic general advice so you don’t look like a groom who bought a black suit (big no-no) and wore a satin tie (big no-no) that matched the bridesmaids (big, big no-no). First off, I see you are looking for a tux. Is your venue “tux enough” for a tux? What I mean is that a tux (black tie dress code) will look out of place in a buffet-style restaurant but will fit in a place like a ballroom or high-end winery. Just like you wouldn’t wear a tux to a beach wedding or an emerald green suit to a ballroom wedding, your outfit has to match the formality of your event. Be prepared for the black tie dress code. A tux is a part — as you know — of the black tie dress code. It is an extremely strict dress code. You’re allowed at most one deviation from the rules and that’s it. Black tie is elegant because of its strictness. It’s so strict because it’s so elegant. What I see some grooms do is that they’ll buy a black non-tuxedo suit and try to dress it up as a tux, or buy a “fashion” tuxedo which is really a suit made by a fashion brand that is masquerading as a tux. In menswear, a black suit is the least versatile suit you can buy. There are only four occasions you need to wear a black non-tuxedo suit: a funeral, being a magician, working your shift as a waitstaff, or being a bodyguard on The Masked Singer. Ready for all the rules? Like I said it’s a lot: More on reddit.com

Are US-Americans really wearing Tuxedos for their wedding?
Some American weddings are in the evening with a Black Tie dress code, but not all. It fits ‘ballroom’ type venues. Edit to add: many American wedding have dress codes other than Black Tie, and I’ve never seen a Black Tie wedding for a ceremony and reception that was in the late morning or afternoon. Is a Tux realy all that different from a suit?
Maybe you should take your fiancée for a try on and explain to her why you feel less attractive in a tux than a suit. She wouldn’t want to feel anything less than beautiful so why should you? Then you can look around together for things that you both like. More on reddit.com

r/weddingplanning on Reddit: Advice on buying first tux for wedding as groom
February 10, 2025 -

Hi all,

I’m in the process of buying my first tux for my wedding at the end of May, and I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed. I have a maximum budget of around $1200 for everything, but I’m looking to save money where I can.

I’ve been looking at places like Men’s Warehouse, Suit Supply, and Black Tux. I’m planning on getting the suit tailored if I buy from one of these spots, but I’m not sure if they’re good quality or if I should consider higher-end options like Nordstrom. Is it worth investing in made-to-measure somewhere instead?

A bit of background: I’m currently in Fresno, CA, but the wedding is in Houston. I’ll be in Houston briefly in March and then again the week before the wedding.

Also, I’m not super fashion-savvy. Should I just stick with a single-breasted suit with a shawl lapel, or are there other styles I should consider?

Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Idk anything about tux stuff but just be aware you might need to increase your budget or consider a rental. My fiance just purchased his suit (black pants and a black jacket) and those two pieces plus very minimal tailoring was 1k. I would imagine a tux is more expensive. For reference he got his from Boss.
